Summary

=== OVERVIEW === I need a qualified structural engineer to complete the engineering design of a heavy-duty modular steel platform for indoor warehouse use. The project will be divided into two phases:: Phase 1: Technical Feasibility Review Budget: USD $50 Phase 2: Final Engineering Package Budget: USD $400 This job is intended for Phase 1 only: a preliminary professional technical opinion / feasibility review. We may hire one or more candidates for this Phase 1 review in order to compare engineering judgment, experience, and recommendations. This is NOT a request for a complete structural design package. For Phase 1, we do not require final calculations, structural models, simulations, fabrication drawings, assembly drawings, or detailed engineering studies. The goal of Phase 1 is to obtain a qualified professional opinion on the feasibility of the concept, the main structural risks, and the key issues that must be verified or modified before moving into final engineering. The best candidate from Phase 1 may later be hired separately for the full Phase 2 engineering package. === DESCRIPTION === The structure will be installed indoors in a warehouse in Guatemala. It must eventually support up to 54 mini containers arranged in 18 columns x 3 levels x 1 container deep. Each container can weigh up to 2 metric tons, including contents, for a maximum possible load scenario of 108 metric tons. The mini containers carry long profiles that occupy their full length, so their loads are generally balanced along the container and no major unbalanced tipping load inside each container is expected. Approximate structure dimensions: 15.15 m long x 2.85 m deep x 2.40 m high. The structure will be anchored to an existing 20 cm reinforced concrete slab. No new footings, foundations, or excavation are allowed. We already have a preliminary SketchUp model. The goal of this first job is to evaluate feasibility, identify structural risks, and recommend what must be reviewed or modified before final engineering. The structure will be used indoors in a warehouse, with no rain, chemicals, marine exposure, or aggressive corrosion conditions. Containers will be moved frequently using an overhead bridge crane. No forklift impact is expected, but the final design should consider reasonable dynamic/impact factors. The preliminary concept uses steel framing and floor-level beams/rails to help distribute load over the existing slab. The structure must allow people to walk underneath, so floor-level obstructions should be minimized. Preferred concept: - Steel structure. - Bolted field connections where possible. - Shop welding only where required. - Anticorrosive paint finish. - Standard steel profiles. - Modular sections transportable by standard trucks. === EXPECTED DELIVERABLES === Deliverables for this phase only: - Brief technical feasibility report in PDF format. - Review of the preliminary SketchUp concept. - Identification of the main structural risks. - Preliminary opinion on whether the concept can move forward, needs modifications, or requires a different structural approach. - Initial comments on load path, support layout, floor-level load distribution beams/rails, anchoring to the existing 20 cm concrete slab, base plates, lateral stability, buckling, deflection, bracing, modular fabrication, and bolted field assembly. - Recommended design code or standard for the final design. - List of missing information required before final design.
