Java Developer for Legacy Modernization Projects

Java Developer – Legacy Modernization We are looking for an experienced Java Developer for a contract engagement focused on modernizing legacy enterprise systems. You will be working on a client project involving migration from monolithic architecture to microservices, codebase refactoring, and gradual cloud adoption. This is a hands-on technical role — we need someone who is comfortable reading and reasoning about old, underdocumented code and making confident decisions about how to evolve it safely. What you'll be doing Analyzing and refactoring existing Java-based legacy systems Designing and implementing microservices using Spring Boot Migrating legacy data layers and schemas (Liquibase / Flyway) Building and consuming RESTful APIs Writing unit and integration tests to establish coverage on legacy code Collaborating with the client's internal team on architecture decisions Documenting changes and maintaining technical specs You're a strong fit if you have 5+ years of commercial Java development experience Hands-on experience with legacy system modernization (not just greenfield projects) Strong command of Spring Boot / Spring Framework Experience with SQL databases and schema migration tools Familiarity with Docker, CI/CD pipelines, and at least one cloud platform (AWS / Azure / GCP) Ability to work independently, communicate blockers early, and deliver on agreed timelines Bonus points for - Experience with COBOL or mainframe integration - Kafka or event-driven architecture - Kubernetes, Terraform, or service mesh tools Language: Strong English Required: Upper-intermediate or higher (written communication is frequent) To apply, please include 1) A brief description of a legacy modernization project you worked on — what the system was, what you changed, and what the outcome was 2) Your Java version range experience (e.g., Java 8 → 17 migration) 3) Your availability and current hourly rate
