Something about her sticks with me; the way she held herself, the hint of a smile despite the injury. Jill’s voice cuts through my thoughts. “I’m gonna head out. No sense trying to race now.” I manage a weak smile. “Sorry, Jill. Hate that you had to miss it too.” She shrugs, already glancing after Allison. “It wasn’t easy getting her to agree to this one. I’ll have to talk her into another.” With a shake of her head, she heads for the parking lot. “See ya, Dane! And maybe try not to take out any more runners today?” She tosses a last grin over her shoulder. When she’s gone, my gaze drifts back to Allison, not exactly what I signed up for this morning. Hell, I hadn’t even planned to run this thing solo. Jake bailed at the last minute and said he had a stomach bug. Sucks for him, but still, if he’d shown up, maybe I wouldn’t have run into her, literally. For the past few years, participating in charity races has become my thing. Before that, I was a mess, living without a plan or limits, partying hard without a thought for the future. And now, running keeps me centered. Gives me something physical to focus on. I’ve done maybe two dozen of these fundraising races in the last three years. Food banks, cancer research, shelters. If it’s for a good cause, I’ve probably run it. Usually, I make a donation, show up, do the race, and that’s it. But today? Today I sent a woman sprawling, and now I can’t get her out of my head. The park’s mostly quiet now. Most runners have disappeared into the distance, their rhythmic footsteps replaced by soft conversations and the gentle sound of music from a loudspeaker set up by the race organizers. A breeze stirs the air, carrying sweat, damp earth, and that unmistakable blend of sunbaked pavement and sunblock.
