Summary

Project Overview I’m developing a compact outdoor IoT device for the golf industry that integrates GNSS positioning, wireless communication, environmental sensing, and battery power into a custom mechanical assembly. The electrical hardware (PCB) has already been designed and is entering firmware development. I’m now looking for an experienced mechanical engineer to design a production-ready enclosure and mechanical integration for the device. The product will operate outdoors year-round and must be durable, weather-resistant, serviceable, and designed with manufacturing in mind. ⸻ Project Scope The selected engineer will be responsible for designing the complete mechanical package around an existing PCB. Responsibilities include: * Design the primary enclosure around an existing PCB assembly. * Design the internal battery compartment and retention system. * Design the cartridge that installs into a custom tubular housing. * Design the top cap assembly. * Develop a waterproof/weather-resistant sealing strategy. * Design venting that allows environmental sensing while preventing water intrusion. * Design PCB mounting and vibration protection. * Design battery serviceability. * Work with antenna placement constraints to minimize RF interference. * Apply Design for Manufacturing (DFM) principles. * Prepare CAD files suitable for prototyping and future production. ⸻ Existing Electronics The electronics have already been developed and include: * GNSS receiver * LoRa wireless communication (433 MHz) * Environmental sensors * Battery power system * Custom PCB You will collaborate with the electrical engineer to optimize the complete mechanical package. ⸻ Design Requirements The finished design should be: * Compact * Lightweight * Durable * UV resistant * Rain resistant * Irrigation resistant * Easy to assemble * Easy to service * Suitable for long-term outdoor use Special attention should be given to: * Waterproofing * Environmental venting * RF antenna packaging * Battery accessibility * Structural durability * Manufacturing tolerances ⸻ Deliverables Expected deliverables include: * Complete 3D CAD model * Production drawings * Assembly drawings * Exploded assembly * Mechanical Bill of Materials (BOM) * STEP files * STL files for rapid prototyping * Manufacturing recommendations * Design revisions following prototype testing ⸻ Preferred Experience We’re looking for someone with experience in one or more of the following: * Outdoor IoT products * Environmental sensor enclosures * GPS/GNSS devices * LoRa or wireless devices * Battery-powered electronics * Waterproof enclosure design * Consumer products * Industrial products * Injection molding * CNC machining * IP65/IP66/IP67 enclosure design Experience designing products for volume manufacturing is highly preferred. ⸻ Preferred CAD Software Experience with one or more of the following: * SolidWorks * Fusion 360 * Creo * Siemens NX * Autodesk Inventor ⸻ Bonus Experience Experience with: * RF antenna integration * Pressure vent design * Waterproof membrane design (such as Gore vents) * Battery enclosure design * Outdoor sensor systems ⸻ Collaboration You will work directly with the electrical engineer responsible for the PCB design. The objective is to develop a mechanical design that optimizes durability, manufacturability, and electrical performance while preparing the product for prototype and production. ⸻ What I’m Looking For I’m looking for an engineer who enjoys solving challenging mechanical integration problems and has experience bringing electronic products from prototype to manufacturable designs. This is more than a CAD modeling project. I’m looking for someone who can provide engineering input on: * Durability * Reliability * Manufacturability * Assembly * Cost optimization * Outdoor performance * Long-term production readiness This project has the potential to evolve into a long-term engineering relationship through multiple prototype revisions and eventual production.
