Mechanical / Structural Engineer Needed to Redesign Adjustable Trestle into Single Aluminium Product
Worldwide
We are seeking for an experienced mechanical/structural engineer to help redesign our current product range of adjustable construction trestles. Our existing range consists of two adjustable steel trestles that overlap at 1200 mm and together cover an adjustment range of approximately 812–1800 mm. Both products share the same base design and an almost identical 20-line bill of materials, differing mainly in leg geometry and travel. Our objective is to rationalise these into a single adjustable aluminium trestle that: - Covers the full height adjustment range - Significantly reduces weight - Remains competitive with aluminium trestles currently on the market - Is practical and economical to manufacture - Maintains the required structural performance and certification intent This is not simply a CAD drafting project. We are looking for engineering input and practical design recommendations from someone experienced in structural products and manufacturing. Initial Scope: The purpose of this engagement is to evaluate the existing design and recommend the best engineering direction. The initial deliverables include: - Review our existing drawings and bill of materials - Assess the current design - Recommend an approach for consolidating the two products into one - Recommend suitable aluminium materials, sections, and manufacturing methods - Identify any structural or design risks - Provide a brief design proposal outlining your recommended solution - Estimate the work required for detailed engineering and production documentation The successful freelancer will be considered for the next phase, which may include CAD redesign, engineering calculations, prototype refinement, manufacturing drawings, and ongoing engineering support. Ideal Experience We're looking for someone with experience in: - Mechanical engineering - Structural product design - Aluminium fabrication - Welded assemblies - Design for Manufacturing (DFM) - Load-bearing equipment Experience designing products such as scaffolding, trestles, ladders, work platforms, construction equipment, or industrial support equipment would be highly regarded. When applying, please include: - A brief introduction to your relevant experience - Examples of similar structural or aluminium products you have engineered - Your preferred CAD software - A short explanation of how you would approach converting a welded steel product into an aluminium design while maintaining structural performance We value practical engineering judgement and clear communication. If the initial engagement is successful, there is potential for ongoing work through prototyping, testing, and production.
