Memoir Book

Summary

I’m looking for a developmental editor to help me with structure, pacing and emotional resonance of my story I need to tell. This book is rooted in real, personal events. No real person is named in the finished work, but the underlying material is sensitive, and I need an editor who handles true experience with care and discretion. I will require a confidentiality agreement before sharing the full manuscript. My book is built around one night. Each chapter tells a piece of my story, then three ways of looking at it: logical, bodily/somatic, and spiritual. I need help making sure that device works without becoming repetitive, confusing, or too explained. There are chapters that explain what led up to it, because you need to understand how I got there and why that night hit the way it did. But the heart of the book is that one night. It moves close to real time, using actual texts, actual details, and thoughts I wrote down while I was still inside it. On the surface it reads like the story of that night and a person who vanishes. The reader is inside it with me. But what is the most important element I am trying to do is show that underneath, it’s actually an internal reckoning with myself of trusting what my body knew when no outside evidence ever confirmed it (a result of a childhood trauma that carried me through my entire life) and the concept of perception. The book deliberately misdirects, withholds its meaning, and resists a tidy takeaway. The not-knowing is the entire point. I am looking for line editing that protects my voice because my voice is the book. I need someone who can preserve it, sharpen it, and help the story land with the emotional and structural impact it deserves. I'm not looking for any prose smoothed into something inspirational, self-help, or overly polished. I don’t want the ambiguity cleaned up too early, nor the meaning spelled out for the reader. It is told in two parts. Part One is meant to withhold. Part Two is where the unraveling happens. The manuscript is around 30,000–40,000 words across 16–18 short, fast-paced chapters. I have about 28,000 words drafted so far.
