Product Development Engineer Needed: Compact Wireless Charging Accessory

Summary

We are developing a compact consumer-electronics accessory that adds Qi wireless charging capability to an existing rechargeable handheld device. The target device already contains its own rechargeable battery and charging circuitry. Our accessory will contain no battery. We are looking for an experienced product development engineer to take the concept from electrical architecture through a functional prototype and ultimately a manufacturer-ready design. Product objective The accessory should: * Fit securely around or interface cleanly with a small handheld rechargeable device * Receive power from standard Qi-compatible wireless chargers * Deliver appropriate charging power through the device’s existing charging interface * Contain no internal battery * Remain compact, durable, and comfortable for everyday use * Minimize heat generation * Maintain reliable wireless charging alignment * Allow the target device to be easily inserted and removed * Be designed with eventual high-volume manufacturing in mind The final mechanical architecture is intentionally open. We are interested in the engineer recommending the best approach rather than working from a predetermined enclosure design. Possible approaches could include flexible molded materials, rigid structural components, hybrid construction, interchangeable adapters, or other solutions. Phase 1: Electrical architecture and feasibility The engineer will evaluate the charging requirements of the target device and design or select an appropriate wireless power receiver solution. This may involve: * Selecting an existing Qi receiver IC/module * Designing a custom receiver PCB * Determining appropriate voltage and current output * Designing the connection to the target device * Evaluating charging efficiency * Evaluating heat generation * Determining coil size and placement * Incorporating appropriate electrical and thermal protection * Verifying compatibility with common Qi charging pads We are not committed to any existing receiver module or electrical architecture. We want the engineer to recommend the best solution based on size, cost, reliability, manufacturability, and performance. The primary Phase 1 deliverable is a functional proof of concept demonstrating reliable wireless charging of the target device. Phase 2: Mechanical and functional prototype Develop the physical product around the validated charging architecture. This will include: * Measurement or 3D scanning of the target device as appropriate * Mechanical enclosure or interface design * Wireless charging coil placement * Electronics mounting * Charging connector integration * Device retention * Ergonomic considerations * Access to necessary device controls and features * Heat management * Design for repeated insertion/removal * Consideration of magnetic alignment if beneficial The engineer should recommend appropriate materials and manufacturing methods. Potential materials may include TPU, TPE, silicone, PC/ABS, or a combination of flexible and rigid components. The goal is a polished functional prototype that can be physically tested with the target device. Phase 3: Design for manufacturing After successful prototype validation, refine the product for commercial production. Deliverables should enable us to request quotations and manufacture the product through independent contract manufacturers. Mechanical deliverables * Native editable CAD files * STEP files * STL/3MF prototype files * Fully dimensioned 2D drawings * Material specifications * Critical tolerances * Exploded assembly drawings * Assembly instructions * Design-for-manufacturing documentation Electrical deliverables If a custom PCB is developed: * Electrical schematic * PCB layout * Gerber files * Drill files * Bill of materials * Manufacturer part numbers * Pick-and-place/CPL files * Assembly drawings * Test points and test procedures * Any necessary programming or configuration files Manufacturing deliverables * Complete product BOM * Recommended manufacturing processes * Estimated production BOM at approximately 1,000, 10,000, and 50,000 units * Tooling recommendations * Assembly process * QC and functional testing specifications * Recommended production tolerances Intellectual property and file ownership All project-specific engineering work and deliverables created under this engagement must become the exclusive property of the client upon payment. We must receive all editable source files necessary to manufacture, modify, or further develop the product independently. The design should not require the continued involvement of the engineer or depend on proprietary components controlled exclusively by the engineer. We must remain free to manufacture the product with any qualified supplier. Ideal candidate We are particularly interested in engineers with experience in: * Consumer electronics product development * Qi wireless charging * Low-power electronics * USB-C power and charging * PCB design * Compact handheld electronics * Injection-molded plastics * TPU/TPE/silicone product design * Overmolding or multi-material assemblies * Design for manufacturing * Asian contract manufacturing * Taking products from concept through mass production Experience with charging accessories, mobile-device accessories, wearables, or other compact consumer electronics is highly relevant. Please include with your proposal 1. Examples of physical consumer-electronics products you personally engineered. 2. Examples of products you helped move from prototype into commercial production. 3. Your experience with Qi wireless charging. 4. Your experience designing molded enclosures or flexible components. 5. Whether you handle both electrical and mechanical engineering. 6. The CAD and PCB design platforms you use. 7. Your proposed development approach. 8. Estimated cost for: * electrical architecture / proof of concept * functional prototype * production-ready engineering package We are looking for functional engineering capability, not primarily industrial-design rendering or CAD drafting.
