Real-Time 3D Avatar Engineer - Android, Blender, Rendering Optimization
Worldwide
We are looking for an experienced real-time 3D engineer to work on an animated avatar system that runs on the web and Android. This role requires a combination of 3D asset preparation, character rigging, Three.js or WebGL rendering, Android development and mobile rendering optimization. Project responsibilities - Inspect, repair and optimize rigged character models in Blender or a similar 3D application. - Export production-ready GLB or VRM assets. - Preserve the character’s skeleton, skinning, materials, animations and morph targets during export. - Work with 52 ARKit-compatible facial blendshapes or shape keys. - Ensure that the avatar has a correct upper-body, neck and head-bone hierarchy. - Support real-time facial expressions, head rotation and upper-body movement. - Integrate and render animated GLB or VRM avatars using Three.js, React Three Fiber or a similar WebGL framework. - Integrate the avatar renderer into an Android application. - Profile and optimize Android rendering performance. - Reduce draw calls, shader cost, overdraw, texture memory, polygon count, loading time and frame-time spikes. - Maintain smooth animation and acceptable visual quality across a range of Android devices. Required experience - Strong Blender character modeling, rigging, skinning and weight-painting experience. - Experience with facial rigs, shape keys, morph targets and blendshapes. - Strong Three.js, WebGL, React Three Fiber, Babylon.js or equivalent experience. - Experience loading and animating GLB, glTF or VRM characters. - Android development experience using Kotlin, Java, Unity or another suitable Android stack. - Strong understanding of mobile GPU and real-time rendering optimization. - Experience with profiling tools and performance debugging. Highly desirable experience - ARKit 52 facial blendshapes. - MediaPipe Face Landmarker or similar face-tracking systems. - Android OpenGL ES, Vulkan, Filament or Unity rendering. - Custom shaders, GLSL, HLSL or material optimization. - Avatar accessories such as hair, glasses, clothing and separate switchable meshes. - Bone and morph-target animation driven by real-time tracking data. - Optimizing avatars to maintain approximately 30 FPS on mid-range Android devices. When applying Please include: - Links to two or three relevant real-time 3D or avatar projects. - An example of a character you personally rigged or repaired. - An example of a Three.js, WebGL or mobile 3D application you optimized. - The Android rendering technologies you have used. - A description of a rendering-performance problem you solved, including before-and-after FPS or frame-time measurements. - Your experience with GLB, VRM and ARKit facial blendshapes. - Whether you personally perform Blender work or collaborate with a separate 3D artist. Please begin your proposal with the words “Android Avatar” so we know you reviewed the complete description. The first milestone will be a small paid technical evaluation using an existing animated GLB avatar.
