3D Reconstruction and Modeling of Lost Historical Doll Furniture for Large-Scale 3D Printing

Summary

I am looking for an experienced 3D modeler/CAD designer to reconstruct three pieces of historical doll furniture (a bench/sofa, a table, and an armchair) from a single surviving archival photograph. The original objects no longer exist and no measurements, drawings, or additional photographs are available. Therefore, this project involves a combination of: • forensic reconstruction from a historical image, • geometric analysis, • interpretation of repeating modular structures, • creation of accurate and printable 3D models. The furniture appears to consist of a highly repetitive lattice/grid system made from identical modular elements. Deliverables The final deliverables should include: • 3D models of all three furniture pieces (bench/sofa, table, armchair) • Files in: o STL o STEP o OBJ (optional) o Native working files (Rhino, Blender, Fusion 360, etc.) • Models prepared for large-scale fabrication and 3D printing. Scale The original objects were doll furniture, but the reconstructed models will ultimately be fabricated at full, life-size scale (1:1). At this stage, the furniture does not necessarily need to be structurally load-bearing. The primary goal is an accurate visual reconstruction suitable for exhibition purposes. However, experience with designing for fabrication and large-scale printing would be an advantage. Available Material I can provide: • one archival photograph (the only surviving image of the objects), • historical context and curatorial information. No additional documentation or measurements exist. Required Skills I am looking for someone with experience in: • 3D modeling from photographs/reference images • Rhino, Blender, Fusion 360, or similar software • Parametric modeling and modular structures • Preparing files for 3D printing • Reconstruction of historical or artistic objects (preferred) Proposed Workflow 1. Analyse the archival photograph. 2. Identify and reconstruct the repeating modular unit(s). 3. Build the three furniture pieces digitally. 4. Review and revise the reconstruction collaboratively. 5. Deliver print-ready files. To Apply Please provide: • examples of comparable projects (reconstruction, heritage, sculpture, furniture, or complex lattice structures); • your preferred software; • estimated timeline and budget; • any questions regarding the reconstruction methodology. This is an art and exhibition project involving the reconstruction of lost objects. I am looking for someone who enjoys combining technical modeling skills with historical interpretation and creative problem-solving. Please note that this is not a straightforward CAD drafting job. Since only one photograph survived, the project requires analytical reconstruction and informed interpretation rather than direct copying from measurements.
