Residential Structural Engineer (Wood Framing | Remote | Ongoing Work)

We are a growing residential architecture firm seeking an experienced structural engineer to support a variety of custom residential projects throughout the United States. This is an ongoing freelance opportunity for the right person with the potential for a long-term working relationship. Our projects primarily include: * Custom single-family homes * Home additions * Major renovations * Decks, covered porches, and pergolas * Detached garages and accessory structures * Occasional light commercial tenant improvements Responsibilities * Review architectural drawings for structural design. * Provide structural calculations when required by the jurisdiction. * Produce structural framing plans and construction details. * Design foundations, beams, headers, columns, shear walls, and lateral systems. * Coordinate directly with the architect during design development. * Respond to plan review comments related to structural engineering. * Seal drawings when licensed in the project state (when applicable). Preferred Qualifications * Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in one or more U.S. states. * Extensive experience with residential wood-framed construction. * Strong understanding of the International Residential Code (IRC) and International Building Code (IBC). * Experience designing conventional framing as well as engineered lumber systems (LVLs, PSLs, glulam beams, I-joists, roof trusses, etc.). * Familiarity with wind, snow, and seismic design requirements across multiple jurisdictions. * Experience reviewing drawings created in Chief Architect, AutoCAD, or Revit is a plus. * Excellent written communication and attention to detail. Ideal Candidate We’re looking for someone who enjoys building a long-term professional relationship rather than simply completing one project. Many of our projects require close collaboration between the architect and structural engineer, so responsiveness and communication are just as important as technical expertise.
