Summary

Scientific & Technical Writer — Laboratory Equipment & Life Sciences Summary We are looking for a scientific/technical writer with a strong science background to create educational articles about laboratory equipment, scientific technologies, assays, and research workflows. Our articles are written primarily for scientists, laboratory managers, researchers, and other professionals working in life sciences. You do not need to have hands-on experience with every instrument or technology we cover. More important is the ability to understand unfamiliar scientific subjects, research them thoroughly using authoritative sources, and explain them clearly and accurately. A background in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, molecular biology, biomedical science, engineering, or a related scientific discipline is strongly preferred. Types of Articles Topics can range from individual instruments to broader scientific applications and workflows. Examples include: Flow cytometry and common flow cytometry assays PCR, qPCR, and digital PCR ELISA and immunoassays Automated liquid handling High-throughput screening Cell-based assays Cytokine and biomarker analysis Luminex/xMAP multiplex assays Microplate readers High-content imaging Cell culture and bioreactors Chromatography and analytical instrumentation Laboratory automation Comparisons between scientific technologies Detailed overviews of specific laboratory instruments Some articles are broad educational guides, while others focus on a specific instrument, assay, application, or comparison. What We're Looking For The most important qualification is the ability to understand science and write about it accurately. The ideal writer will have: A degree or significant experience in a scientific or engineering discipline Strong scientific research skills Experience writing technical or scientific content Ability to learn unfamiliar scientific technologies independently Ability to read and interpret scientific literature, manufacturer documentation, application notes, manuals, and technical specifications Ability to distinguish reliable technical information from unsupported marketing claims Excellent written English Ability to explain complex subjects clearly without oversimplifying the science Strong attention to factual accuracy Hands-on laboratory experience is a plus but is not required. Experience with laboratory instrumentation, biotechnology, pharmaceutical research, analytical chemistry, or life-science research is also a plus. Research & Sources Factual accuracy is extremely important. Writers should be comfortable researching topics using sources such as: Peer-reviewed scientific literature Manufacturer application notes Instrument manuals Manufacturer technical documentation Universities and research institutions Government and other authoritative scientific sources Scientific and technical claims should be supported with appropriate references. We would rather have a writer identify uncertainty or ask a technical question than make an unsupported assumption. Writing Style Our goal is educational technical content rather than generic marketing copy. Articles should be: Technically accurate Well researched Clear and organized Interesting to scientific readers Detailed enough to be useful Accessible without being oversimplified Written naturally rather than sounding like generic SEO or AI-generated content SEO experience is helpful but is secondary to scientific knowledge, research ability, and writing quality. Typical Assignment We generally provide a topic and an outline or starting direction. A typical article is approximately 1,000–2,500 words, although length varies depending on the subject. The writer will: Research the topic. Review the proposed outline and recommend changes when appropriate. Write the article. Provide sources supporting important scientific and technical claims. Make reasonable revisions based on technical or editorial feedback. We specifically want writers who are comfortable telling us when an outline, assumption, or technical statement should be changed based on their research. Paid Test Article We will begin with one paid test article. If the first project is a good fit, we have a large number of additional articles available and are interested in developing an ongoing relationship with the writer. How to Apply Please include: A brief description of your scientific or technical background. Your experience writing scientific or technical content. 2–3 relevant writing samples. Any hands-on laboratory or scientific instrumentation experience you have. Your rate for a typical 1,000–2,000 word researched article. Your typical turnaround time. Please also answer this question: You are assigned an article about a laboratory instrument or scientific technique that you have never worked with before. Briefly describe how you would research the subject and determine which sources and technical claims are reliable. We are more interested in seeing how you approach unfamiliar technical subjects than whether you already know every type of laboratory equipment we cover.
