Senior Node.js Backend Engineer (Ongoing, Full-Time)

About us We're a fast-moving B2B SaaS company building AI-powered software for the multifamily real estate industry. We ship quickly, keep our stack lean, and prefer integrating proven tools over reinventing the wheel. About the role We're looking for a senior Node.js engineer to join our small, high-trust engineering team. You'll own meaningful parts of our backend — telephony, webhooks, and the integrations that tie our system to the outside world — working directly with our Head of Engineering on real production systems, not isolated tickets. Much of this work lives in the unglamorous edge cases: duplicate webhook deliveries, third-party APIs that fail halfway, and jobs that must be safe to run twice. If that's the part of backend work you find satisfying rather than annoying, you'll fit well here. What you'll do - Build and maintain backend services in Node.js/Express on PostgreSQL — APIs, webhooks, and scheduled background processing. - Own third-party integrations end to end — telephony (Twilio), transcription/AI providers, and CRM bridges — including auth, webhook signature verification, rate limits, and graceful failure. - Make event-driven processing correct: design for at-least-once delivery, idempotency, retries, and safe concurrent execution — often without a dedicated queue broker. - Protect data isolation in a multi-tenant system where getting a query wrong leaks one customer's data to another. - Write clean, well-tested (Jest), observable code (Sentry) that holds up in production. Our test suite is real; you'll be expected to add to it. - Help us make pragmatic build-vs-integrate calls. What we're looking for - 4+ years building and operating production Node.js backends (you've been on call for your own code). - Deep, demonstrable understanding of idempotency and retry/failure handling in event-driven or webhook-driven systems. Tell us how you've made a handler safe under duplicate or out-of-order delivery — whatever the underlying tech (a job queue like BullMQ/SQS, or a database-backed queue, or raw webhooks). We care more about the reasoning than the brand. - Proven track record building and maintaining third-party API integrations end to end, including the failure modes. - Solid SQL fundamentals (PostgreSQL preferred) — you can reason about transactions, unique constraints, and race conditions, not just write queries. - Strong testing, logging, and production-debugging instincts. - Excellent written English and the ability to work asynchronously in a small team. - Able to work consistently within US Eastern Time business hours (hard requirement, regardless of location). - (Optional, a plus) Public backend code or a sanitized sample you can share. We know most production work is private — the paid assessment is where we'll see how you build. Nice to have - Telephony / VoIP integrations (Twilio, TwiML, media streams). - Data or AI/LLM processing pipelines (transcription, classification, diarization). - Experience in an early-stage or bootstrapped startup.
