Summary

I am the founder of The American Freedmen Lineage & Heritage Institute, Inc. (public-facing brand: Black Lineage & Heritage Institute), a newly formed nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving, documenting, researching, and educating the public about American Freedmen-descended lineage through genealogy, historical research, archives, family history, and public education. Our long-term vision is to become a nationally respected institution for lineage documentation, historical preservation, educational programming, and family history resources. What I'm Looking For I'm not looking for someone to simply write grants. I'm looking for a strategic nonprofit professional who can help build an organization that is capable of earning grants, attracting donors, developing partnerships, and creating sustainable long-term growth. I want someone who enjoys building organizations from the ground up and who wants to become a trusted advisor during our formation stage. Responsibilities • Develop an overall nonprofit growth strategy • Identify funding opportunities aligned with our mission • Write compelling grant proposals and letters of inquiry • Build a grant calendar and funding pipeline • Help refine our programs into fundable initiatives • Assist with strategic planning and organizational development • Review our website, messaging, and public positioning • Help create measurable goals and outcomes • Advise on donor cultivation and fundraising strategy • Recommend operational improvements and best practices • Collaborate on partnership opportunities with universities, foundations, museums, genealogy organizations, and historical institutions Preferred Qualifications • Demonstrated success securing nonprofit grants • Experience working with new or startup nonprofits • Knowledge of IRS 501(c)(3) organizations • Strong strategic planning skills • Excellent grant writing and storytelling ability • Experience with nonprofit fundraising and development • Familiarity with CRM and donor management systems • Ability to communicate complex ideas clearly Bonus experience includes: • Genealogy • Archives or museums • Historical preservation • African American history • Public education • Community engagement What Success Looks Like Within the first six months, I hope to have: • A comprehensive nonprofit growth strategy • A prioritized grant pipeline • Multiple grant applications submitted • Clear fundraising priorities • Stronger organizational messaging • Strategic recommendations for partnerships and expansion Budget Please include your hourly rate or project-based pricing. I'm more interested in finding the right long-term partner than simply choosing the lowest bid. When You Apply Please answer the following: Tell me about the nonprofit you are most proud of helping build. Approximately how much grant funding have you helped organizations secure? What would be your priorities during your first 90 days working with a newly formed nonprofit? Have you worked with organizations focused on education, genealogy, historical preservation, archives, or cultural heritage? Why does this project interest you? Include the words "Historical Stewardship" at the top of your proposal so I know you've read this posting carefully. I'm looking for someone who sees the long-term potential of this organization and wants to help build something meaningful from the beginning.
