Senior Python / Algorithmic Trading Developer – AI, ASX & IBKR

NO AGENCY’S NEED TO APPLY. We are looking for an experienced Python developer with genuine algorithmic/automated trading experience to continue development of an existing personal trading and market-intelligence platform. This is an ongoing private project, not a hedge fund, investment business or large corporate system. The platform has recently been rebuilt into a cleaner, lightweight V3 architecture. We do not want another full rewrite. The goal is to continue improving V3 while selectively bringing the strongest concepts from an older, larger version into the new architecture properly. Our longer-term focus is primarily the Australian market, particularly ASX equities, mining/resources, company announcements, catalysts and commodity-linked opportunities. What Already Exists The project is not starting from scratch. V3 already includes a working foundation covering: * Python backend and PostgreSQL * Broker connectivity, including IBKR * Automated trading/execution framework * Existing strategies and bots * Risk and trade-governance systems * Performance tracking * Dashboard * Docker-based local deployment There is also a much larger original version containing additional strategies, AI systems and concepts. This will be used as a reference, while V3 remains the active development base. Where We Want to Take It Key areas we want to progressively develop include: * Stronger ASX market intelligence * Advanced Australian mining/resources engine * Company announcement and catalyst analysis * Copy-trading / institutional intelligence * Specialised automated trading bots * Advanced bot management and performance monitoring * Bot Factory / strategy-generation framework * Strategy Lab for backtesting and paper validation * Risk, execution and broker reliability * Better market/news/data pipelines * AI-assisted market research and strategy development * System monitoring, auditing and dashboard improvements The longer-term concept is a system capable of researching opportunities, developing and evaluating strategies, running multiple specialised bots and determining from real performance data which strategies genuinely have an edge. For new strategies, the general philosophy is: Research → Candidate Strategy → Backtest → Paper Trading → Performance Evaluation → Promote / Reject We want this developed progressively rather than trying to build everything at once. Who We Are Looking For We do not expect one developer to already be an expert in every area listed in this post. Our main priorities are: * Strong senior-level Python/backend development * Genuine algorithmic or automated trading-system experience * Understanding of broker execution, orders, fills and reconciliation * Understanding of backtesting, risk and strategy performance * Clean software architecture and ability to work with an existing codebase * Practical experience integrating modern AI/LLM technologies You should understand that building a reliable trading system involves considerably more than generating buy/sell signals. Experience with order lifecycle, position sizing, slippage, liquidity, risk controls, market-data quality, strategy evaluation and paper/live execution is highly valuable. Highly Regarded, But Not Mandatory Experience in any of the following would be a significant advantage: * Interactive Brokers / IBKR API * Australian equities / ASX * Mining/resources or commodity markets * ASX announcements and market data * AI agents / tool calling * Financial research using LLMs * Backtesting frameworks * PostgreSQL * FastAPI / asyncio * Docker * React / dashboard development You do not need to have all of these skills. A strong trading-systems engineer who can understand the existing platform and learn the more specialised areas as the project develops is preferable to someone claiming expertise in everything. AI Development AI is an important part of the longer-term project. We are interested in practical applications of AI for areas such as: * Market and company research * Financial intelligence * Research agents * Strategy generation and review * Automated analysis * Performance analysis * System auditing * Bot/strategy improvement However, we do not want AI replacing proper deterministic risk and execution controls. The goal is to combine advanced AI capabilities with a reliable and measurable trading architecture. Development Approach We want to keep V3 lean, modular and understandable. The preferred approach is: Understand → Audit → Improve → Test → Measure → Iterate rather than rewriting the platform. Real market data and genuine performance measurement are important. Synthetic or fallback data should not silently influence trading decisions. Development should use normal engineering practices including Git, feature branches, testing, documentation and clear commits. Working Arrangement This is expected to be an ongoing project for at least 3–12 months, with the potential to continue much longer for the right person. Initial commitment is approximately 5+ hours per week. You can largely work at your own pace. We care more about quality, technical ability, reliability and steady progress than fixed working hours. This is a direct owner/developer project, so communication and decision-making are straightforward. We are looking for someone who wants to progressively understand and improve the platform rather than simply complete a short task and move on.
