Senior Software Governance & GitHub Migration Consultant

We are a specialized German engineering company developing advanced driver simulation systems for training and operational scenarios. Our systems include: * real-time simulation software * simulator host systems * tablet-based cocpit applications * hardware integration * scenario and environment simulation The software has been developed successfully over more than 10 years by a highly experienced lead developer. The systems are technically strong and operationally proven, but the software architecture and development processes have evolved organically and are now becoming difficult to scale and maintain. We are looking for a highly experienced Software Architecture / Git Transition Consultant who can help us professionalize and structure the existing development environment. Your role will be to support the transition from a highly developer-centric environment toward a more maintainable, documented and scalable software engineering structure. Main objectives: * analyze the current software architecture * establish professional Git/GitHub workflows * introduce sustainable software documentation structures * improve release and version management * support knowledge transfer processes * reduce dependency on a single key developer * help create maintainable and scalable development processes * introduce professional software engineering governance This is primarily an architecture, process and transition role — not a coding-heavy development position. Required experience: * senior software architecture experience * Git / GitHub workflow expertise * experience with complex legacy systems * experience with real-time or simulation systems * software process structuring * software documentation standards * CI/CD and release management * experience moderating technical transition processes * ability to work diplomatically in sensitive environments Preferred: * C++ experience * experience with embedded or hardware-connected systems * simulator background Very important: The existing lead developer is highly capable and has deep system knowledge. The goal is not replacement, but long-term sustainability, maintainability and operational resilience. We are looking for someone who can: * build trust * work collaboratively * document and structure existing systems * introduce professional engineering practices pragmatically * support gradual transition without disrupting operations Project type: Short- to medium-term consulting / transition support Location: Remote possible, Europe preferred Language: English required, German is a plus.
