Senior Software Lead, Product Engineering - freelancers only no agencies

We are looking for a senior, product-focused Software Lead to lead our engineering and software teams to build on our app and product offering. The role will be both a managerial and hand-on position made to bridge the current gap between the hardware and software of our product. You will take over existing engineering and software team members, reorganise the team as needed and fill existing gaps to shape a qualified and agile product team, leading it to the achievement of progressive milestones. You will also be hands-on: setting technical direction and standards, while staying close enough to execution to be genuinely additive day to day. We place real value on in-person collaboration as we build out the team, particularly with Product. Location: Remote (team clusters in Warsaw PL, Brisbane AU, London UK). We are looking for extensive relevant experience and a track record of leading teams that have built and scaled wearable or consumer products Key Responsibilities Lead and grow an engineering and software team, setting technical direction, standards, and ambitious delivery cadence Work closely with the Product team to translate product strategy into a scalable, well-architected product+app combination Own key technical decisions around architecture, data infrastructure, and engineering practice as the team and product scale Embed AI tools into the team's day-to-day engineering workflow to accelerate quality and velocity Set and evaluate the standard for AI competency and usage when hiring other developers into the team Build and maintain robust, reliable pipelines for large-scale data processing, including physiological signal data such as PPG Bring commercial awareness to technical decisions, understanding the trade-offs between technical ambition, cost, and business priorities Help establish engineering culture, process, and hiring practices as a senior technical leader Candidate Profile A demonstrated track record of leading engineering teams that have built and scaled consumer products Experience in working at the interface between software and hardware in a commercial fast-paced company Deep, current fluency in using AI tools in software development, with a clear, articulate point of view on how AI should be embedded across an engineering team, not just used individually A well-formed perspective on what strong AI competency and usage look like in other developers, and how to assess this when hiring A strong understanding of large-scale data processing, ideally including direct experience with physiological or biometric signal data such as PPG Commercial understanding, with the ability to connect technical decisions to business outcomes and prioritize accordingly Comfortable operating as a senior, hands-on leader in an early-stage environment, building process and team from a relatively blank slate Strong communication skills, with the ability to work closely and collaboratively with Product and non-technical stakeholders Tech leadership to align technical improvements with business goals, primarily by mitigating technical debt, enhancing developer productivity, and ensuring the stack scales securely. Current setup: white-label architecture with shared codebase across both iOS and Android. Mobile: Flutter and Dart; Backend: Firebase, Firestore data storage, Cloud Functions; Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) for communicating with the device and NFC.
