Senior Stormwater & Hydrology Engineer
Worldwide
Modern Engineering Solutions, LLC | Fully Remote | Global Opportunity The Role In this position, you will lead stormwater analysis and design and hydrologic and hydraulic (H&H) modeling for a variety of water resources-related projects, including water quality retrofits, habitat restoration, transit, and site development. Work spans design from concept level to final construction documents, including writing and assembling stormwater and H&H reports, preparing and managing illustrative communications exhibits for project proposals and public presentations, and supporting construction administration. You'll work in close partnership with our U.S.-based PE of record, who reviews and seals final deliverables, while you lead the technical work day to day. Candidates with a wide variety of successful design and task leadership experience will be viewed favorably. You'll Be Perfect For This Role If: You're a civil engineer with 4-12 years of experience in stormwater drainage, hydrology, and hydraulic engineering across urban, commercial, and industrial development You hold advanced modeling expertise (HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS 1D/2D, SWMM, PCSWMM, XPSWMM, InfoWorks ICM, EPANet, InfoWater, or similar) and can move fluidly between traditional methods (Rational Method, Unit Hydrograph, SCS/TR-55) and modern analytical tools You've led H&H work across a range of project types, water quality retrofits, habitat restoration, transit, water distribution, and site development, not just one narrow lane You're comfortable owning technical work from concept level through final construction documents, not just the analysis phase You can write and assemble a stormwater/H&H report as capably as you can prepare a technical exhibit for a client presentation You've worked remotely with multidisciplinary, cross-border teams and know how to deliver clear, technically defensible work without needing to be in a room to do it You want to help build out a dedicated hydrology/hydraulics capability inside a firm that's actively growing its municipal and flood-control work Key Responsibilities Water Distribution & Hydraulic Modeling Lead hydraulic modeling and analysis across both water distribution and stormwater systems Build, maintain, and utilize hydraulic models using EPANet, InfoWater, or similar advanced software Conduct capacity optimization, pipeline design, and pump station evaluations Perform hydraulic simulations to ensure efficiency and reliability of water distribution systems Experience with transient hydraulic modeling and real-time monitoring systems Align hydraulic models with leak detection systems and automation tools Stormwater & H&H Modeling Lead hydrologic and hydraulic (H&H) modeling and stormwater analysis and design across a range of water resources project types, including water quality retrofits, habitat restoration, transit, and site development Develop stormwater drainage concepts, detention facilities, storm sewers, open channels, culverts Run hydrologic and hydraulic modeling using SWMM 5, AutoCAD Civil 3D, SSA, HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS Conduct water quality calculations, storm sewer sizing, and detention basin design Perform H&H analysis and provide or review detailed calculations for drainage, watershed, and flood studies Reporting, Communication & Delivery Oversee production of construction plans, drainage reports, specifications, and cost estimates Prepare drainage reports, hydraulic studies, and permit documentation for regulatory agencies Prepare and assemble stormwater and H&H technical reports for submission to the reviewing PE Prepare and/or manage illustrative communications exhibits for project proposals, concept development, and public presentations Support construction administration on active projects Work directly with municipalities, utilities, and project teams on complex water challenges Participate in client meetings to discuss budgets, timelines, and technical solutions Communicate designs and technical information clearly to internal team members, and support client- and agency-facing communication as needed Team & Technical Coordination Delegate and review similar tasks performed by early- and mid-career staff Provide mentorship and peer reviews for engineering colleagues Support operations teams by developing effective solutions for utilities and municipalities Coordinate with the U.S.-based PE of record for final review, sealing, and submission of all engineering deliverables Apply and defend methodologies (Rational Method, Unit Hydrograph, SCS/TR-55, FEMA standards) appropriate to project scope and jurisdiction Required Qualifications Required: Bachelor's degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering (Master's in Water Resources or Hydraulics preferred) 4-12 years of experience in stormwater drainage, hydrology, and hydraulic engineering, ideally across urban, commercial, and industrial development Proficiency with hydraulic modeling software (EPANet, InfoWater, or similar) Strong skills in AutoCAD Civil 3D, SWMM 5, SSA, and GIS applications Experience with HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS, PCSWMM, XPSWMM, InfoWorks ICM, and related modeling platforms Deep knowledge of fluid dynamics, pipeline design, pump systems, and stormwater conveyance Experience with transient hydraulic modeling and real-time monitoring systems Working knowledge of FEMA floodplain standards and U.S. regulatory review processes Experience working remotely with multidisciplinary, cross-border teams Strong written and verbal communication skills in English, including technical report writing you can explain technical concepts clearly to clients, agencies, and internal teams Professional engineering license or equivalent international credential a plus, though not required for this role Preferred: Experience with Global Mapper, WMS, or similar advanced tools Background in land development and multidisciplinary project coordination Familiarity with ISWM standards and regional stormwater permitting requirements Demonstrated ability to prepare regulatory-compliant reports and permit documentation Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite for technical exhibits and communications About Us Modern Engineering Solutions isn't another civil engineering firm stuck in the old ways. We built this company because we were tired of watching talented hydraulic engineers waste hours on repetitive documentation instead of actually modeling complex systems.
