# Shopify Storefront API Developer for Custom Headless Ecommerce Website ## Project Overview I am designing and building a fully branded Hebrew RTL website for a veterinarian who specializes in senior dogs. The website will combine two main services: 1. A personalised product recommendation experience for senior dogs. 2. Booking and information for veterinarian home visits. The website itself will be custom-built, most likely using Next.js, React, Codex, or Claude Code. Shopify will be used as the ecommerce backend for managing products, variants, pricing, inventory, orders, discounts, cart, and checkout. I am looking for an experienced Shopify developer to handle the technical integration between Shopify and the custom website. *This is not a standard Shopify theme project. The frontend will be built separately, and your role will be to connect it correctly to Shopify using the Shopify Storefront GraphQL API and any other required Shopify tools.* ## Main Responsibilities The developer will be responsible for pulling Shopify product data into the custom website, including: * Product title * Product description * Product images * Product price * Compare-at price, when available * Product variants * Variant options * Variant-specific prices * Product availability * Inventory status * Product handle and Shopify IDs * Collections or categories * Relevant product metafields The integration should allow products to be created and managed inside Shopify, with updates automatically reflected on the custom website. ## Cart Integration The custom website will have a branded cart experience. The developer should implement: * Create a Shopify cart * Add products and specific variants to the cart * Add multiple products at once * Update product quantities * Remove products * Display cart subtotal and total * Display discounts * Apply Shopify discount codes * Save and restore the customer’s cart * Handle unavailable or out-of-stock products * Redirect the customer to Shopify Checkout The website will include a 10-question questionnaire that recommends a personalised set of products. After completing the questionnaire, the customer should be able to add the entire recommended set to the Shopify cart with one click. The cart may also need to include custom information such as: * Dog name * Personalised care plan ID * Recommendation category * Reason the product was recommended ## Shopify Checkout Integration The customer should complete payment using Shopify Checkout. The developer should: * Generate and use the correct Shopify checkout URL * Transfer the customer’s selected products and variants to checkout * Preserve cart information and custom attributes * Make the transition between the custom website and Shopify Checkout as smooth as possible * Configure the checkout to match the website branding as closely as Shopify allows * Support Hebrew and right-to-left presentation where possible * Ensure Israeli pricing, currency, shipping, and customer information are handled correctly Payment details should remain securely handled by Shopify. We do not want to build a custom credit card payment form. ## Order and Status Tracking The website should be able to track the status of orders after checkout. This may include: * Payment pending * Payment completed * Order confirmed * Processing * Fulfilled * Shipped * Delivered * Cancelled * Refunded The developer should recommend and implement the correct solution for receiving Shopify order updates, likely using Shopify webhooks and a secure backend endpoint. Order status data may need to be saved in our own database so it can later be displayed inside a custom customer area. The integration should also handle cases where a customer begins checkout but does not complete payment. ## Product Recommendation Integration The recommendation questionnaire itself will be designed and built separately, but the selected products must connect correctly to Shopify. The expected flow is: 1. The customer answers 10 questions about their senior dog. 2. The website calculates which products are most suitable. 3. The website retrieves the relevant products and variants from Shopify. 4. The personalised results page displays the product information. 5. The customer can add individual products or the complete recommended set to the cart. 6. The customer continues to Shopify Checkout. 7. The website receives and tracks the resulting Shopify order status. Product suitability information may be stored using Shopify metafields, such as: * Care category * Suitable dog age * Suitable dog weight * Product priority * Recommendation explanation * Whether veterinarian confirmation is required Experience working with Shopify metafields and metaobjects is therefore important. ## Technical Expectations The exact stack is still being finalised, but the website will likely use: * Next.js * React * TypeScript * Shopify Storefront GraphQL API * Shopify webhooks * A backend API * A database such as PostgreSQL or Supabase You should be comfortable working with a custom headless Shopify storefront rather than only editing Shopify Liquid themes. You should also understand the difference between: * Shopify Storefront API * Shopify Admin API * Shopify Customer Account API * Shopify webhooks * Public and private Storefront access tokens All sensitive tokens and Admin API credentials must remain secure and must never be exposed in frontend code. ## Required Deliverables * Shopify Storefront API connection * Reusable product-fetching functions * Product and variant data integration * Collection integration * Metafield integration * Cart creation and cart management * Add-to-cart functionality * Add-complete-recommended-set functionality * Discount-code support * Shopify Checkout redirect * Shopify webhook configuration * Order and payment status tracking * Error handling * Loading and empty states * Out-of-stock handling * Technical documentation * Environment variable documentation * Assistance testing the full purchase journey The code should be clean, reusable, documented, and easy to maintain. ## Required Experience Please apply only if you have experience with: * Shopify Storefront GraphQL API * Headless Shopify development * Next.js or React * TypeScript * Shopify cart mutations * Shopify Checkout integration * Shopify products and variants * Shopify metafields and metaobjects * Shopify webhooks * Secure API and token handling * Order status synchronisation Experience with Hebrew or RTL websites is an advantage, but not mandatory. ## Important Clarification I will handle the website design, branding, pages, and overall frontend experience. I need a developer who can take responsibility for the Shopify commerce integration and make sure the product, cart, checkout, and order-tracking flows work reliably from beginning to end. You may need to work alongside me while I build the frontend and provide clear instructions for how your Shopify integration should be used inside each page and component. ## When Applying Please include: 1. Examples of headless Shopify websites you have worked on. 2. Your experience with the Storefront GraphQL API. 3. How you would track order and payment statuses after Shopify Checkout. 4. Whether you have implemented Shopify webhooks before. 5. Your recommended architecture for this project. 6. Your estimated timeline and fixed-price or hourly-rate proposal. 7. Any potential Shopify limitations or risks you believe we should consider. Please begin your proposal with the words “Senior Dog Shopify” so I know you have read the full description.
