Software Company Printing Software Support
Worldwide
## Context We are a software company that develops printing software for retailers. Historically, our solution has been an **on-premise application** installed within the customer's network. More recently, we have developed a **fully SaaS version**. The application allows users to browse a catalog of products, select the ones they want, and print the corresponding documents (labels, promotional materials, etc.) directly on printers located in the customer's store. ## Current Challenge Our on-premise solution supports **batch printing**: users can select multiple products and print them all with a single action. With the SaaS version, this functionality has become difficult to implement. Because the application runs entirely in the browser, printing requires access to local printers. Browsers such as Chrome and Edge enforce security restrictions that require user interaction for printing, preventing us from launching multiple print jobs seamlessly from a single click. As a result, users currently have to print documents one by one. A comparable user experience would be Amazon's shopping cart: users select multiple products and complete everything with one action. We want the equivalent for printing—a user selects multiple items and prints all of them with a single click. ## Existing Alternatives We have already implemented workarounds: * A local computer installed permanently in the store that receives print jobs from the SaaS application and sends them to the printers. * A dedicated hardware box (print gateway) installed in the store that acts as a local print spooler between the SaaS platform and the printers. While these approaches work, they introduce local infrastructure and dependencies. From our perspective, they are no longer a "pure SaaS" architecture. ## Our Objective Our goal is to provide a **true SaaS solution** that: * requires no permanently installed local computer or hardware gateway; * allows users to print multiple selected documents with a single action; * remains compatible with standard web browsers and their security models; * is suitable for production use and can be sold as a fully cloud-native product. The application is already in production, so we are looking for an architecture or technical approach that could enable true batch printing without relying on local infrastructure.
