Classroom Nursing Teaching Assistant (TA) Department: Nursing Education Position Type: Full-Time or Part-Time (Non-Exempt) Job Summary The Classroom Nursing Teaching Assistant (TA) is a licensed nurse who works directly under the guidance of lead faculty to support instructional delivery, facilitate skills lab sessions, and provide academic support to nursing students. This role bridges the gap between complex lectures and hands-on understanding, ensuring students grasp foundational nursing concepts and safety procedures before moving to patient care. Key Responsibilities 1. Classroom & Lecture Support Attend lectures alongside lead faculty to assist with classroom management, distribute instructional materials, and help coordinate interactive learning activities. Monitor student engagement and assist in managing digital learning platforms or classroom technology. Facilitate small-group discussions, case study reviews, or remediation sessions for students needing extra help with lecture concepts (e.g., pharmacology calculations or medical-surgical fundamentals). 2. Skills Laboratory & Simulation Facilitation Co-facilitate hands-on skills lab sessions, demonstrating proper nursing techniques (e.g., wound care, IV insertion, medication administration, and vital signs). Observe and evaluate student technique during skill check-offs, utilizing standardized checklists to ensure absolute safety and compliance. 3. Grading & Academic Administration Assist faculty with grading objective assignments, quizzes, and homework based on established rubrics. Track and document student attendance, lab participation hours, and skills competency check-offs for program compliance records. 4. Student Mentorship & Tutoring Conduct scheduled peer-level tutoring or study sessions for students navigating rigorous nursing content. Provide constructive, low-stakes feedback to students to build their clinical confidence and critical thinking skills. Qualifications & Requirements Education & Licensure Active License: Current, unencumbered license as a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in the state of practice. (Note: RN is preferred for Associate Degree programs, while experienced LPNs are frequently utilized for Practical Nursing classroom support). Minimum Education: Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN/ASN) required; Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred or actively in progress. Experience Minimum of 1–2 years of active clinical nursing experience. Prior experience as a preceptor, mentor, or peer-tutor is highly preferred. Skills & Competencies Thorough, up-to-date knowledge of basic nursing skills and patient safety standards. Approachable, patient, and clear communicator who enjoys mentoring developing professionals. Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple student stations in a laboratory environment. Basic digital literacy (Microsoft 365, email, and learning management systems like Canvas or Moodle).
