Technical Writer & Layout Designer – Electrical Transformer Manual

We are seeking an experienced Technical Writer & Layout Designer to format, refine, and produce a professional, publication-ready user/maintenance manual for industrial electrical transformers (specifically single- and three-phase Pad-Mounted units). The successful candidate will take our raw content and outline to restructure, standardize layout and typography, create structured indexes, and coordinate technical visual assets into a clean, compliant document. Key Responsibilities 1. Document Layout & Structure Recommend and implement an optimal layout (single-column, two-column, or hybrid) appropriate for complex industrial/engineering manuals. Establish a clear visual hierarchy with consistent typography, spacing, alignment, and formatting across all sections. 2. Indexes & Navigation Build and format a comprehensive Table of Contents (using existing Pad-Mounted transformer documentation standards as a baseline). Generate and integrate accurate cross-referenced list structures: List of Figures / Technical Drawings List of Tables 3. Visuals & Technical Illustrations Replace placeholder images with professional engineering drawings, CAD exports, or vector technical illustrations as required. Ensure proper numbering, captions, and in-text references for all diagrams and figures. 4. Typography & Standardization Establish a strict typography hierarchy (font family, sizing, weights) for main titles, subheadings, internal sections, and body copy. Standardize Safety & Warning Blocks (ANSI/IEEE or OSHA style warnings) to ensure maximum legibility and strict visual consistency throughout the text. Required Qualifications Experience: Proven experience drafting or designing technical manuals, engineering documentation, or industrial product guides. Tools: Proficiency in Adobe InDesign, Microsoft Word (Advanced Styles & Indexing), FrameMaker, or LaTeX. Vector illustration skills (Adobe Illustrator) are a plus. Knowledge: Familiarity with electrical engineering concepts or transformer documentation (Pad-Mounted, Pole-Mounted, ANSI/IEEE standards) is highly preferred. Attention to Detail: Excellent eye for visual hierarchy, consistent typography, and precise technical formatting. Project Deliverables Source File(s): Fully editable master files (e.g., .INDD, .DOCX, or .FM) with set styles/masters. PDF Output: High-resolution print-ready PDF and an optimized digital PDF with active bookmarks/hyperlinks. Style Sheet / Template: A brief 1-page summary of font rules, spacing guidelines, and safety warning styles used for future revisions.
