Documentary Cinematographer / Video Journalist Needed — NYC — 6/24/26, 10 AM–12 PM I'm looking for a documentary cinematographer, video journalist, or filmmaker to film interviews for a short documentary currently in development about the Russia–Ukraine war. About the Project The documentary explores how people understand and interpret the war under conditions of censorship, occupation, exile, and restricted access to information. The project features interviews with Ukrainian journalists documenting life under Russian occupation, Russian journalists working in exile, and members of the Ukrainian and Russian-speaking communities in New York. As the project has evolved, it has become increasingly focused on questions of memory, testimony, perception, and how people make sense of events that are often difficult to observe directly. Upcoming Shoot The shoot will take place in Manhattan on Wednesday, June 24 from 10 AM to 12 PM. It will involve interviews with members of New York’s Ukrainian community, including educators and students at a Ukrainian high school, many of whom recently arrived from Ukraine. What I'm Looking For I’m looking for someone comfortable filming interviews in a natural documentary style. Handheld shooting is welcome and may be preferred over a highly polished corporate-style setup. The goal is for the interviews to feel intimate, human, and conversational rather than staged. Experience with documentary filmmaking, journalism, vérité-style shooting, or field reporting is strongly preferred. Equipment Please indicate whether you have: Camera(s) Audio equipment Basic lighting, if needed Clean audio is very important. Budget Budget for this initial shoot is $80–$120 for approximately 2 hours. There is potential to be involved in future interviews for this project, including conversations with community members, journalists, and individuals with direct connections to Ukraine and Russia. To Apply Please send: A brief introduction Relevant documentary, journalism, interview, or observational work Your location within the NYC area Your rate within the stated budget I am especially interested in hearing from filmmakers and video journalists who have experience covering social issues, politics, conflict, migration, human rights, or documentary storytelling.
