YouTube Video Editor for Snarky, Plain-English Tech Tutorials
Worldwide
I run a YouTube channel called The Grumpy Sysadmin. The channel is made up of plain-English tech tutorials for home users and everyday PC owners, especially around Windows troubleshooting, backups, repair, recovery, USB tools, and practical computer fixes. I need a video editor for a paid test project. This is a $100 fixed-price test edit. If the test goes well, there may be ongoing recurring work. The style is important. This isn't a corporate tech video. This isn't a faceless documentary. This isn't a gaming montage. This isn't a TikTok/Reels-style hyperactive edit. or a generic “viral content” project. The channel is technical, helpful, dry, sarcastic, snarky, and a little grumpy. The humor usually comes from my delivery, pauses, frustration, and deadpan comments. The editor’s job is to tighten and support that style, not bury it under random effects, fake hacker stock footage, or background music that sounds like a motivational seminar for printers. For the test project, you'll receive approximately 15–20 minutes of raw footage. The finished video will likely be around 10–15 minutes. What I need: Tight, clean editing Remove mistakes, long dead space, repeated lines, and obvious recording issues Preserve intentional pauses, dry delivery, reactions, and rant beats when they help the humor land Add punch-ins, zooms, screenshots, simple screen recordings, UI visuals, and relevant B-roll where appropriate Use on-screen text when it helps clarify or emphasize a point Keep the tutorial easy to follow for nontechnical viewers Use music and sound effects lightly and only when they support the video Avoid generic stock footage, fake hacker visuals, excessive effects, and over-edited “YouTube bro” nonsense Deliver a complete first draft within 3 calendar days of receiving the footage and instructions Include the editable project/source files with delivery Important requirement: I do expect the editor to source or create reasonable supporting visuals when needed. That may include simple screenshots, screen recordings, UI examples, and relevant technical visuals. I'll provide anything specialized that cannot reasonably be recreated, but I don't want to supply every single visual individually. Communication matters. I don't need constant approval requests for routine editing choices, but I do expect clear communication if there is a real issue that could affect the schedule or quality of the edit. If you disappear until the deadline, that's a problem. Please include the keyword GRUMPY near the beginning of your proposal so I know you read the full post. In your proposal, please answer these questions: Have you edited long-form YouTube videos before? If yes, please send one directly relevant sample. Are you comfortable editing technical/tutorial content with screen captures and screenshots? Can you deliver a complete first draft within 3 calendar days? Will you personally edit the test video, or will it be assigned to someone else? What software do you edit in? Are project/source files included? Generic proposals will be rejected. I'm looking for someone who can edit clear, helpful, personality-driven technical videos while keeping the grumpy/snarky tone intact. The right editor should make the video sharper, easier to follow, and funnier without turning it into a circus.
