I have over 13 years of experience designing, building and manufacturing electronics, more than 9 of which I have spent in the world’s electronics manufacturing hub: Shenzhen, also known as China’s Silicon Valley. I live here because I love the speed at which engineering, prototyping and manufacturing happens - I can’t imagine doing my job from anywhere else in the world. I have a 1st class masters degree in Engineering Science from the University of Oxford, and was in the top 10% of my year group. I hold a Guinness World Record for the world’s first 3D printed laptop. I have done several highly successful ($200k+) Kickstarter/Indiegogo campaigns for my own startups, and have engineered and helped manufacture countless products that have gone into large-scale mass production. Some notable brands are Therabody (4.2+ million units), Philips (600k+ units), Breville (300k+ units), Keurig (500k+ units). If you have any experience with getting hardware into mass production, you’ll know that most of the time/money spent is in solving manufacturing-related problems. I speak Chinese and live within a 30 minute drive from the large majority of Shenzhen’s electronics supply chain and manufacturing. I’ve spent a non-negligible portion of my working life implanted inside factories to solve any and all problems you can possibly imagine. All of this means that the chances of your product succeeding go up significantly the minute you start working with me :) What I can offer. ============ Consultancy: I can do initial design reviews, give you information on manufacturing in China and also give advice on any aspect of building and running a hardware startup. Electronics: schematic design, component selection, layout and everything required to go to mass production. You will get designs that are highly optimized for manufacturing in China, which means I will give you the ability to use local ICs/components that have a significantly lower cost and lead time than the ones a UK/EU/US-based engineer will typically use (e.g. Texas Instruments, ST etc). China’s IC industry is now booming thanks to huge government funding, and the quality, documentation and support is almost on par with that of US-based equivalents, so you can rest assured that the cost savings are worth it. Mechanical: it will be designed from the start to be ready for mass production (I’m always in DFM mode). I have experience with all the most commonly used manufacturing methods for consumer electronics: injection molding, stamping, casting, machining etc. I use simulations (FEA, CFD) where necessary to validate a design, which minimizes prototyping rounds. The mechanical design can be built from 3D concept models or design sketches provided by you. If you don’t yet have these, I have some excellent industrial designers I can introduce you to if you are interested. BLDC/PMSM Motor Control: a lot of products I have been involved with are motorized and battery-powered. I was dissatisfied with using external, ready-made motor control solutions (high cost, poor performance, slow development time) so created my own motor control firmware library. I use custom-made MATLAB models for tuning the controller performance, which is especially useful (and complex) for sensorless FOC topologies. Since I am often developing the firmware for the product as well (buttons, LEDs, battery etc), I designed the library to be highly modular and integrated. This means that your entire product functionality - including motor control and battery management- can use a single, low-cost MCU. Prototyping: I know several companies that focus specifically on rapid prototyping, and I have been working with them for years (one of which I met the first week I came to Shenzhen!). They come in many flavors of price/quality/capability, so I can choose the appropriate one for your project. It will most likely be faster and cheaper than any prototyping you can do locally, even accounting for shipping. Certifications: I live close to well-equipped EMC test labs and can oversee the certification process for any you are likely to need (FCC, CE, UN38.3, UL etc). Manufacturing: I have personal relationships with the owners of several contract manufacturers. They range in size from small to medium and large (which for reference means you plan to give a PO of 2k+, 20k+ and 200k+ respectively), so I can choose the most suitable one for the stage of your product. We can also move between them with minimal friction if your product’s needs change over time. Through my own companies, and working with them on behalf of other western companies, you can rest assured that they have been thoroughly vetted (my standards are very high) - I am 100% confident that they will meet both your quality and cost requirements. In summary: if you want the peace of mind of working with an english, highly educated and highly experienced engineer, but also plan to manufacture in China, then I’m the right person for you.Firmware Engineering
