Can you share your past experience working with students?

This is a common interview question that offers insight into the teacher's work history, whether this will be their first teaching job or if they're a seasoned educator. Past behavior can give you an indicator of what to expect if they're hired, so ask this to learn about their background.

When answering this question, look for a thoughtful response about what they've gained from the teaching experience, including any achievements. Even if they've recently earned their degree or certification, they can still discuss experiences as a student teacher.

What level of student are you most comfortable teaching?

While it was once common to teach as if all students are at the same level. Now, many teachers have embraced differentiated instruction, which allows both gifted and struggling students to learn at a level that’s appropriate to them. Ask about their teaching style, and how it accommodates the different challenges that students may have with certain material.

Ask about their experiences instructing students of different levels, especially if they've done so within the same classroom.

Can you share your teaching philosophy? Please provide an example of your teaching philosophy and how you share it with students and parents.

This question gives teachers the opportunity to dive deep into their teaching style, including what philosophies and practices have inspired them along their teaching journey. Look for indicators that they're able to be flexible depending on the situation and the students in their class.

What is your favorite subject matter to teach and why? Do you have past experience teaching this subject matter?

Discovering what a teacher is passionate about gives great insight into what you can expect from them during the school year. For general education teachers in primary grades, the answer could show the interviewer the respondent’s strong and weak points. For a teacher applying for a specific subject, their answer to this question could show why they are the ideal person for the task.

What is your experience creating lesson plans?

Lesson plans are extremely important for keeping teachers and their students on track. Listen for insights into their organizational skills as well as what their typical lesson plans may entail. Are they a teacher that does consistent testing throughout the year? Or do they prefer other methods for ensuring students understand the material? The lesson plan will let you know whether their teaching style and plans align with the school's goals.

What has been your biggest challenge?

Every school year provides a series of difficult challenges, whether it’s a change in leadership, a difficult parent, or a subject matter they had to teach but didn’t enjoy. Asking about their biggest challenge will demonstrate how the contract teacher was able to move forward.

How do you handle a difficult student?

Every educator knows that some students’ lives at home can make them difficult in the classroom. During the interview, ask this to gauge their problem-solving skills and how they deal with challenging students by treating them with empathy and understanding.

What types of positive reinforcement have you used with difficult students? Please provide sample answers of what you’ve done or what you would do. Also share how you worked with their parents/guardians.

Positive reinforcement, even in the most difficult situations, is very important. This question will allow the teacher to share how their strategies have been beneficial during times of conflict.

Do you have any experience leading extracurricular activities after school? If not, would you be interested?

If the school you’re hiring for has a robust afterschool program, then you may want to see if the teacher would enjoy leading clubs or sports activities. Should they decide to sign on for these activities, it will be another way to build bonds with their new students.

Hi there! I’m Mary B. The basics: -10 years of editorial experience -5 years of social media management -M.F.A. in Creative Writing -Published author Do you need a creative writer to spruce up your essay, blog post, or book? What about a trained eye to proofread or edit an article or book manuscript? Or, how about someone experienced in social media management, content creation, and web development? I have an enormous capacity for work and an unbridled enthusiasm for imaginative projects, planning, and creative strategy. For example: the considerable editorial experience I’ve gained by working for magazines like The Southern Review, Mississippi Magazine, and serving as a nonfiction submissions reader for Split Lip Press; my background in freelance writing for Click Magazine and Young Professionals of Seattle; intuitive digital marketing skills; and the time spent earning my M.F.A. in Creative Writing from Louisiana State University (2018). I value integrity, empathy, and creative curiosity in both myself and others, aiming to incorporate them in every project or problem I encounter. As a former editorial assistant with nearly a decade of experience in copyediting, proofreading, slush piles, and fact-checking, my training in the publishing and media fields is comprehensive, thorough, and diverse. I also acquired invaluable social media management experience, curated content, and managed creative collaborations during my time as Associate Publisher at Blooming Twig Books, Social Media Editor for New Delta Review, and internship at Folio Literary Agency. In 2015, I was accepted into Louisiana State University’s MFA Creative Writing program, while also serving as an editorial assistant for The Southern Review. Besides editorial work, I have over 4 years of classroom management experience at a variety of academic levels: college, highschool, and elementary. With my teaching background, I’ve learned how to function in stressful, high-energy situations and handle spontaneous conflict. Both my editorial and instructing experiences have informed the way I approach pretty much everything in life. My writing is published in a variety of online and print magazines such as Young Professionals of Seattle, Seattle Arts & Lectures, Flash Fiction Magazine, Psychopomp Magazine, Grimoire, Third Point Press, Sidereal Magazine, Thought Catalog, among others. My editorial expertise, coupled with my collaborative instincts, tenacity, and ability to grasp new concepts and ideas quickly would make me a useful—not to mention adaptable—asset to your team or project. I believe I could assist you in a number of ways, such as: meticulous research, providing a practiced editorial eye, generating engaging content, and conceptualizing imaginative digital strategies.
