Mechanical CAD Drafter – 2D Manufacturing Drawings & 3D Modeling

Summary

Project Overview We are a U.S.-based manufacturer looking for an experienced CAD designer/drafter to assist us with converting a library of existing engineering and manufacturing drawings into standardized CAD files. We currently have a series of drawings in PDF format that need to be recreated as accurate, professional 2D CAD drawings. In some cases, we will also need 3D solid models created from the drawings. This will begin with a small number of drawings but has the potential to develop into an ongoing relationship as we continue to convert existing drawings and create new manufacturing documentation. Initial Scope of Work The first step will be to work with us to develop a standard company drawing format and title block that will be used across all future drawings. Once that standard has been established, the work will include: * Recreate existing PDF engineering/manufacturing drawings as accurate 2D CAD drawings * Apply our standardized company title block and drawing format * Maintain the dimensions, tolerances, notes, callouts, hole locations, geometry, and other technical information contained in the source drawings * Clean up and standardize drawings where appropriate rather than simply performing a direct PDF-to-CAD conversion * Create additional drawing views or details when necessary to properly define the part * Create 3D solid models for selected parts when requested * Identify missing, conflicting, or unclear dimensions/information rather than making unsupported assumptions * Revise drawings based on our review and feedback Required Deliverables For 2D drawings: * DXF * PDF drawing for review and documentation * Editable/native CAD source file For parts requiring 3D modeling: * STEP/STP * Native editable 3D CAD file when applicable * Associated 2D DXF/PDF drawing All completed files and CAD models will become the property of our company. Types of Drawings The drawings will primarily relate to manufactured components, tooling, fixtures, fabricated parts, machined parts, extrusions, and components used in marine/boat manufacturing. Some source drawings may be very good engineering drawings, while others may be older or less complete. We therefore need someone who can read and interpret engineering drawings, not simply operate CAD software. Experience We Are Looking For The ideal candidate will have strong experience with: * 2D mechanical drafting * Creating manufacturing drawings * Reading and interpreting existing engineering drawings * AutoCAD, DraftSight, SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Inventor, or similar professional CAD software * DXF creation and management * 3D solid modeling * STEP/STP file creation * Dimensioning and tolerancing * Manufacturing processes and design for manufacturability * Working from legacy drawings, PDFs, sketches, and existing part information Experience with machined components, fabricated components, composites, tooling, or marine manufacturing would be beneficial. Accuracy Is Important These drawings will ultimately be used for manufacturing purposes. Dimensional accuracy and attention to detail are therefore extremely important. We are not looking for someone to simply run our PDFs through an automatic PDF-to-DXF converter. We need the drawings properly recreated, checked, organized, and suitable for continued engineering and manufacturing use. If information in a source drawing is insufficient to accurately define a feature, we expect you to flag the issue and ask for clarification. Initial Project / Ongoing Work We would like to begin by: 1. Developing our standard drawing template and title block. 2. Providing one or more sample PDF drawings for conversion. 3. Reviewing the completed work together and establishing our drawing standards. 4. Continuing through the remaining drawing library once the process and standards are established. For the right person, we expect this to become an ongoing CAD drafting and modeling relationship. When Applying Please include: * A brief description of your mechanical/manufacturing CAD experience * The CAD software you primarily use * Examples of 2D manufacturing drawings you have created * Examples of 3D solid models, if available * Your experience recreating CAD drawings/models from PDFs or legacy drawings * Whether you can provide DXF, STEP/STP, PDF, and native CAD files * Your hourly rate * Your typical availability and turnaround time Please also briefly describe how you would approach recreating a dimensioned PDF engineering drawing as a production-ready CAD drawing. This will help us distinguish experienced mechanical drafters from applicants primarily doing automated file conversions. We value accuracy, clear communication, consistency, and reliability and would prefer to establish a long-term relationship with one CAD professional rather than continually outsourcing individual drawings to different people.
