BigCommerce Developer | Custom Checkout, CRO, Web Design | Long-Term Role

##WHAT WE DO We run an established, fast-growing e-commerce store on BigCommerce (Stencil theme) and are looking for a developer who thinks like a store owner, not a ticket-closer. The goal is simple: we are building a multi-million dollar store, and we need someone who knows what that takes on the technical side. One disclosure up front: we operate in a restricted industry (fully legal, US-based, licensed business). If working in a restricted vertical is a problem for you, please do not apply. Details will be shared on the intro call. ##WHAT THE WORK LOOKS LIKE - Custom checkout development: designing and building a fully custom, conversion-optimized checkout on the BigCommerce Checkout SDK (Open Checkout), replacing off-the-shelf checkout plugins entirely. This is a core pillar of the role, not a side task. - Stencil theme customization (Handlebars templates, CSS, JS) - Web design work: building and refining pages that look professional and convert - CRO: improving checkout flow, product pages, and site speed with revenue in mind - Bug fixes across checkout, cart, and product pages - JSON-LD structured data deployment via Script Manager - Performance work (CLS, Lighthouse remediation) - Integrating payment processing and third-party verification services directly into the custom checkout flow ##HOW WE WORK - You will work side-by-side with our Head of Growth and Operations. Clear briefs, a managed Trello pipeline, fast answers. Even though we value and reward proactivity, you will never be left guessing what to do or why it matters. - Every completed task requires a short Loom walkthrough showing the work and a regression check on adjacent flows before it moves to review. - Expected load is roughly 10 to 20 hours per week to start, growing with the store and scaling up significantly during the custom checkout build. ##HOW WE MEASURE SUCCESS Attention to detail and proactivity. These are not nice-to-haves here, they are the job. Work that ships without breaking adjacent flows, edge cases caught before we catch them, and problems flagged before they become problems. This matters double on checkout work, where a missed edge case costs real revenue. If you need someone to triple-check your work, this is not the role for you. If you are the person who triple-checks your own work, read on. ##HARD REQUIREMENTS - You personally do the work. No agencies, no teams, no subcontracting. We verify this. If work is delegated to anyone else, the contract ends immediately. - Proven experience building or heavily customizing BigCommerce checkout using the Checkout SDK or Open Checkout (checkout-js). You must be able to show a custom checkout you personally shipped and explain the conversion reasoning behind its design. - Minimum 2 years of hands-on BigCommerce Stencil experience with live examples - Demonstrated web design and CRO work on real stores (show us pages you built and what they did for conversion) - Available for a kickoff video call and regular weekly check-ins ##NICE-TO-HAVES - Experience working in restricted or compliance-heavy industries - Familiarity with checkout flows that involve third-party verification or approval steps before order completion - SEO-aware development habits (clean markup, structured data, Core Web Vitals) ##THE OPPORTUNITY This is a long-term seat, not a one-off project. You will own the technical side of a store that is scaling fast, including a ground-up custom checkout build with full creative and technical input. For the right person, this grows from part-time contract work into a full-time team member position as the store scales.
