Freelance / Lead Mechanical Design Engineer (3D CAD & Prototyping)

Role Overview We are looking for an experienced Mechanical / Product Design Engineer to bring our initial product concept to life. In this role, you will collaborate closely with our founders to develop detailed 3D CAD models, optimize the design for manufacturability (DFM), and prepare files for initial prototyping and production. Key Responsibilities Translate preliminary product requirements, rough sketches, and concepts into complete 3D CAD models (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or equivalent). Design components optimized for target manufacturing processes (e.g., injection molding, CNC machining, 3D printing). Conduct basic stress/tolerance analysis to ensure structural integrity and fit. Deliver complete design packages, including STEP files, technical 2D engineering drawings, and a Bill of Materials (BOM). Collaborate with prototyping vendors or manufacturers during initial prototype builds. Qualifications & Skills Education & Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience). Technical Expertise: 3+ years of professional experience in 3D CAD modeling and physical product development. Manufacturability: Strong understanding of DFM/DFA principles and prototyping techniques. Portfolio: A proven track record of bringing physical hardware products from concept to execution.
