INDUSTRIAL DESIGNER — PROJECT BRIEF Mellow Shed — Premium Outdoor Tote Storage System (SoCal Side Yard) Why this project exists Low interest rates have kept homeowners in place, and a decade of Amazon-driven consumption means households own more physical stuff than ever. Most of that overflow lands in the garage in stackable totes — and once stacked floor-to-ceiling, the garage becomes inaccessible for parking, a gym, a workshop, or ADU prep. We believe inactive storage shouldn't live in the garage at all. It should move to a purpose-built structure that frees the garage for active use. The problem Garage tote storage is a usability problem, not just a space problem. Totes stack deep, so retrieving anything buried means unstacking and restacking everything above it. People tolerate this because there's no better option — not because it works. The solution A side-yard storage shed purpose-built for standard totes, where each tote lives on its own pull-out drawer. No stacking, no unstacking — open a door, pull a drawer straight out, see and use the tote in place. The structure must read as architectural and intentional, not a utility shed, because it occupies a visible part of the property. Target market SoCal homeowners in $1M+ properties with a side yard suitable for placement — typically the zone where trash/recycling bins already live. This is a "glad to have it visible" product, not a "hide it behind the fence" one. Design requirements Tote compatibility (locked): built around the product people already own — the Home Depot HDX Tough Tote (black, yellow lid), two most common sizes: 27 Gal (999-27G-HDX): 22"L × 16"W × 15"H 14 Gal (999-14G-HDX): 23.75"L × 15.75"W × 12.38"H A single drawer must securely fit either size without rattling or shifting. Access without removal: the core interaction is pulling a drawer fully open to view and use the tote in place — never lifting the tote out to see or reach inside it. Labeling system: include a way to identify each bin's contents at a glance without opening it (tags, windows, chalkboard labels, engraved inserts — your ideas welcome). Beyond the drawer (priority ask, not an afterthought): the drawer solves the main problem; we want you to actively design the rest of the experience — lighting in the dark, how doors open, how bins are organized and found, how it feels to use daily. We'd rather get a few unexpected ideas here than a design that stops at "drawers work." Aesthetic (the non-negotiable center): it has to be something a homeowner is genuinely glad to have visible in their side yard — closer to outdoor furniture or architecture than a utility shed. We want your material and design point of view, not execution of a preset look. Cost discipline (design against this, don't fear it): we're targeting an aggressive $2,000 retail. Show us the most premium-feeling concept you can that could plausibly be built to that number — we want to see how far the aesthetic can stretch under real cost discipline, not a blank-check design. Flag anything you believe genuinely can't be done affordably, but lead with "premium feel achieved efficiently." Scope — Phase 1: Conceptual Design (current ask) Photorealistic renderings exploring what this product can look like: Multiple angles — doors open and closed, drawer extended Your own ideas for improving the access/use experience beyond the core drawer (lighting, labeling, organization, anything you identify) Material and finish direction open — we want your recommendation, designed against the cost target above This phase is about look, feel, and experience — not manufacturing detail or final material spec Deliverable: a set of photorealistic concept renders (plus variations) suitable for testing market interest — these may be used on a landing page or in buyer surveys before we commit further. Renders must be marketing-grade, not engineering views. Phase 2 (gated on Phase 1 interest): material selection and sourcing, drawer/slide hardware spec and load rating, structural/anchoring/weatherproofing engineering, manufacturing-ready spec. Scoped only once Phase 1 shows genuine demand. Background context (not Phase 1 requirements — so the concept doesn't paint us into a corner later) Access constraint: most SoCal side yards have a 3'–5' setback with a gate often only 32"–36" wide — a wider unit likely needs to be modular / assembled on site, not delivered whole. Stability: loaded totes (up to ~70 lbs) on fully-extended drawers create real tip-over risk on a tall, narrow structure — consider the base/footprint structurally, not just aesthetically. Product line concept: two tiers under consideration — a shorter unit where every drawer stays in reach without a step, and a taller flagship with more capacity that may include a built-in pull-out step. Lighting ideas already on the table (add your own): motion-activated solar lighting inside each drawer, a solar wall sconce (no electrician), accent lighting along roofline or base. What we're looking for in a response Portfolio work in outdoor furniture, architectural sheds/structures, cabinetry, or similar — must demonstrate photorealistic concept rendering suitable for marketing/landing-page use, not just CAD Estimated timeline and cost for Phase 1 specifically Any early thoughts or questions on the brief
