Legal Strategy Advisor

We're seeking one Legal Strategy Advisor to provide high-level legal guidance for ongoing project campaign. This is distinct from our retained tenant-rights attorney (who handles direct casework like retaliation defense and lease review). You would serve as a strategic legal thought partner — helping the campaign anticipate legal risks, shape its legal strategy, and ensure compliance — without taking on any direct representation or casework. Specific Advisory Duties (Quarterly): Advise on legal risk assessment for campaign tactics (door-knocking, public actions, tenant union formation) Provide strategic guidance on retaliation prevention and response protocols, including how the campaign coordinates with our retained legal counsel Review and advise on Know Your Rights workshop content to ensure accuracy under Massachusetts tenant law Help the campaign understand the legal boundaries of 501(c)(3) legislative advocacy (lobbying limits, non-partisanship requirements) as they apply to our policy platform work Advise on data security and immigration-safety protocols from a legal perspective (we operate on strict need-to-know basis; no immigration status recorded digitally) Review worker-classification and 1099 compliance structures for stipended tenant leaders, in coordination with retained counsel Attend quarterly advisory meetings via Zoom and review materials in advance What We're Looking For: Experience in tenant law, housing law, or poverty law in Massachusetts (preferred but not required — we value willingness to learn the specific legal landscape if you bring strong legal analytical skills from a related field) Understanding of or willingness to learn the legal boundaries of nonprofit legislative advocacy under 501(c)(3) Familiarity with or interest in learning about tenant retaliation dynamics, especially as they affect Black, Latinx, immigrant, and disabled tenants Comfort advising a grassroots campaign led by directly impacted people — not looking to direct or control, but to inform and support Alignment with anti-racist, anti-capitalist, feminist movement values Compensation Structure: Base retainer: $1,250–$1,625/quarter (paid as 1099 independent contractor) Optional performance bonus: 2–3% of funds directly attributable to your fundraising assistance (capped at $5,000/year), structured as a separate consulting agreement All compensation documented via independent contractor agreement How to Apply: Send a brief note (2–3 paragraphs) explaining: Your legal background and any connection to tenant/housing issues How you'd approach advising a grassroots tenant campaign (even if you're still learning this area)
