Process Automation Architect (Discovery & Redesign) — 4–6 Week Contract
Worldwide
We're a national sustainability company (~30-person team) running 20+ AI agents across Sales, Finance, and Operations on n8n, Airtable, and AWS. The agents work. The problem: nobody has ever sat with each person, mapped what they actually do, and redesigned their workflows AI-first. That's this role. You'll interview every person on the team, map every task, tool touch, and handoff by role, then redesign each workflow using a three-layer model: eliminate what shouldn't exist, automate what's rule-based, and route judgment calls through a human-in-the-loop approval system. Then you write the build-ready specs our dev team executes from. This is a discovery + redesign + spec role. You don't build anything. You architect what gets built. What You'll Deliver (4 milestones): Milestone 1 (Week 1–2) — Role-Based Process Maps: Interview all ~30 team members (45–60 min each). Map every task, tool, and handoff organized by role — not by person. Deliver one process map per department + a master task inventory. Flag every multi-role person and every duplicated task. Milestone 2 (Week 2–3) — Gap + Redesign Analysis: Compare current AI agent coverage against the real task inventory. Classify every task: eliminate / automate fully / automate with HITL / keep human. Deliver a prioritized redesign report — what each person's job becomes after automation. Milestone 3 (Week 3–5) — Build-Ready Specs: Write specs for every automation opportunity. Each spec includes: trigger, inputs, AI action, output destination, confidence threshold, HITL routing logic. These go straight to the builders — must be implementation-ready, not conceptual. Milestone 4 (Week 5–6) — Audit Layer Spec: Design observability. What does a failed automation look like? What alerts fire, to whom, when? What's the recovery path? Deliver a spec the infrastructure engineer can implement. Not a Fit If You: Are primarily a developer who wants to build Have only mapped one department, never a whole company Need heavy direction to drive discovery independently Hand back current-state diagrams without redesign thinking To Apply — Answer All of the Following (applications missing answers will not be reviewed): Describe a process mapping or automation discovery project you've done — what company, how many people interviewed, what you delivered. Give one example where you redesigned a manual process into automation — what was manual before, what does it look like now, what did the person's job become? What tools do you use for process mapping? Share an example. Have you worked with n8n, Airtable, or Make.com? Describe what you built or specced. How would you interview a non-technical finance person to find automation opportunities they don't know exist? Have you ever designed monitoring/alerting for automations that can fail silently? Describe it. Your proposed rate or fixed price for this engagement (USD). Your availability, timezone, and earliest start date.
