MUST HAVE: WordPress & PHP core Strong PHP and hands-on classic WordPress theme development ( ex: template hierarchy, Loop, functions.php) Genesis Framework experience specifically — child-theme structure, Genesis hooks (genesis_* actions/filters), theme supports. WordPress hooks (actions vs filters), custom post types, theme supports Proper asset handling — wp_enqueue_script/style, not raw tags Security fundamentals — sanitize on input, escape on output (esc_html, esc_url, wp_kses), nonces Gutenberg / block development Building custom Gutenberg blocks — block.json, edit/save, React/JSX theme.json configuration (design tokens, block settings, editor styling) Static vs dynamic blocks (PHP render callbacks) and when each applies Making content editor-editable in wp-admin — block attributes, RichText, MediaUpload (so editors own the content without touching code) Block patterns; build tooling (@wordpress/scripts, npm/webpack) Frontend Solid HTML/CSS (responsive) and JavaScript; comfortable with a per-page/component CSS approach Workflow & tooling Git version control A local WordPress environment (wp-env, Local, or DDEV) Understanding of the code-vs-database boundary and safe deployment (ship theme/plugin files) Ability to work inside an existing custom codebase without breaking it Strongly preferred WooCommerce theming awareness CI/CD with GitHub Actions (build blocks, deploy theme) Comfort with AI-assisted development (e.g. Claude Code, Codex) as part of a real, reviewed workflow NICE-TO-HAVE Stackable or similar block-library familiarity Block theme / FSE experience (templates/*.html, Site Editor)  Performance/caching (ex: WP Rocket), accessibility, and SEO awareness WordPress REST API
