Backend developer(s) for exciting fintech startup
Worldwide
Summary Surmount is a fintech building embedded investment management infrastructure — think "Stripe for investment management." We own an SEC-registered investment adviser, and our platform lets banks, credit unions, fintechs, and advisory firms launch fully managed investing products under their own brand without building the underlying stack themselves. We're a small, capital-efficient team with solid early stage (seed-series A) traction. The role We're hiring backend engineers to work across three fronts: hardening what we've already got, integrating a recently acquired product into our core platform, and standing up new partner deployments. You'll work directly with the founder and our technology lead, own work end-to-end, and ship into an environment with real accounts and real money behind it. What you'll work on: - Platform stability and reliability - Shoring up existing services: error handling, retries, observability, alerting, and test coverage - Hunting down and eliminating recurring failure modes in scheduled jobs, data syncs, and reconciliation - Paying down targeted technical debt in the areas that cost us the most operationally We recently acquired a very cool agentic-focused company in the space as well and are embedding it into our core offering, which will require migrating and re-platforming pieces of the acquired codebase, unifying auth, data models, and infrastructure Building the surfaces where it plugs into the rest of the product Standing up white-label deployments for new business partners: onboarding flows, branded client experiences, embeddable components Partner-facing dashboards, reporting, and admin tooling API integrations with brokerage, custodial, market data, and identity/KYC providers Internal tooling for account operations and portfolio management workflows Our stack is primarily react/django You're a strong fit if you have: - Great experience shipping production full-stack applications - Deep comfort with modern React/TypeScript and building REST APIs - Real experience improving reliability in a system you didn't originally write — you're comfortable reading unfamiliar code and making it trustworthy - Experience integrating third-party APIs where correctness genuinely matters (payments, brokerage, banking, healthcare) - Ability to work independently, communicate clearly in writing, and ship without heavy hand-holding - Overlap with US Eastern hours Bonus points - Prior work in fintech, wealthtech, brokerage, or banking infrastructure - Experience with a codebase migration, acquisition integration, or multi-system consolidation - Familiarity with providers like Alpaca, Apex, Plaid, Persona, or similar - Experience building white-label or multi-tenant products - Exposure to regulated environments (SEC/FINRA, SOC 2, data privacy requirements (not necessary, but certainly helpful) FYI: Generic proposals and agency mass-applications will be skipped. Do not call or email me about this role please - you will be immediately disqualified.
