Japanese Social Media Manager — Book Launch (Native Japanese, Long-Term)
Worldwide
We are launching the Japanese edition of a memoir about schizophrenia and one family's experience of it, and we are looking for someone to run our Japanese-language presence on X and note. Please read this first: the book concerns severe mental illness, a mother's decline, and a sister who developed schizophrenia in her twenties. The writing is honest and at times painful. If that subject matter is not something you want to work with every day, this is not the right role for you, and we would rather you know that now. About the project Why My Sister? is by Consuelo Walss-Bass, a neuroscientist at UTHealth Houston who has spent thirty years studying the illness that affected her own family. The book is half memoir, half science. It has been prepared in seven languages as a single work, and the Japanese edition is published by アレル書房 (Areru Shobo), an imprint of Genomic Press. The Japanese translation is almost fully complete. We are not seeking a Japanese publishing partner. We are publishing directly and building the readership ourselves, which is why this role exists. What you would do We supply the source material in English: passages from the book, author interviews, background on the science, family photographs with context. You adapt and rewrite that material into natural Japanese for each platform. Short posts and threads for X. Longer essays for note. The Japanese should read as though it was written in Japanese, not carried over from English. Beyond posting, we want someone who will engage: reply to readers, follow relevant accounts, and pay attention to what the Japanese mental health and family-support community is actually talking about. That listening matters more to us than volume. Requirements Native-level written Japanese. This is not negotiable, and we will ask for a sample. Prior experience running social accounts in Japanese, ideally for a book, publisher, or similar cultural project. Comfort with the subject matter, and the judgment to write about a real family's history with care. Working English, sufficient to read our source material and correspond with us. Terms Ten hours per week to start, with room to increase. Ongoing rather than a fixed campaign. We expect the first months to be slow and are not measuring you on follower counts early on. To apply Please include a short writing sample in Japanese, ideally something you wrote for social media. Then answer the three questions below. Screening questions 1) Which Japanese accounts or publications do you follow that write well about mental health, family, or books? Name two or three and say briefly why. 2) Here is one line from the book: Patty loved to paint flowers. Over a few months, the outlines began to disappear from her paintings, until only patches of colour were left. Write a short post in Japanese, for X, using that image. Do not translate it. Write a post. 3) What is your experience with note, and have you written long-form there?
