Academic Developmental and Copy Editor
Worldwide
I am seeking an experienced academic developmental and copy editor for a 65-page working paper/manuscript titled "Primordial Light, Submission, and Rebellion." This manuscript is a rigorous comparative study that examines the structural and cosmological parallels between Twelver Shia theology (specifically the doctrines of Nūr Muḥammad, tasbīḥ, and the Adam/Iblis narrative) and J.R.R. Tolkien's legendarium (the Ainulindalë, Melkor's rebellion, and the metaphysics of the One Ring). It also traces the shared Neoplatonic genealogy of both traditions, referencing thinkers such as Plotinus, Augustine, Suhrawardī, and Mullā Ṣadrā. The goal is to refine this manuscript into a professional, publication-ready article or book chapter suitable for a high-tier academic journal or university press. Scope of Work: 1. Developmental Editing (Philosophical & Narrative Flow): Review the sequence of the arguments to ensure the comparative analysis builds logically and persuasively. Validate that the philosophical depth is maintained without becoming inaccessible. 2. Subject Matter Review: Ensure that the Islamic theological concepts, Neoplatonic philosophical terms, and Tolkien lore are articulated accurately and with the appropriate academic nuance. 3. Line and Copy Editing: Correct any grammatical issues, improve sentence-level flow, and elevate the academic prose to the highest professional standard. 4. Citation & Formatting Audit: Review the bibliography, footnotes, and glossary to ensure all citations meet rigorous academic standards (Chicago/Turabian preferred). Required Qualifications: • Advanced degree (Ph.D. or ABD) in Comparative Literature, Religious Studies, Islamic Philosophy, or a closely related field. • Demonstrated experience editing academic manuscripts, monographs, or peer-reviewed articles. • Familiarity with Islamic philosophy/theology AND/OR Tolkien scholarship. (Please highlight your specific expertise in your proposal). • Exceptional command of academic English and literary criticism conventions. To Apply, Please Provide: 1. A brief cover letter outlining your relevant academic background and editing experience. 2. Specific mention of your familiarity with either Islamic philosophy/theology or Tolkien's legendarium. 3. A short sample (1-2 pages) of a relevant academic text you have edited (before-and-after if possible). 4. Your estimated timeline and rate for a ~65-page (approx. 18,000 - 22,000 words) academic manuscript. I look forward to collaborating with an editor who appreciates the profound intersection of myth, theology, and philosophy.
