# Intellectual Property Attorney (USPTO Trademarks & U.S. Copyright Registration) ## Overview The International Drivers Association (IDA) is a rapidly growing global brand that helps travelers, expatriates, and tourists drive legally in more than 189 countries through our internationally recognized driving permit services. As our business continues to expand, protecting our intellectual property has become a strategic priority. We are seeking an experienced **U.S.-licensed Intellectual Property Attorney** to help establish and strengthen our IP portfolio by advising on filing strategy and managing trademark and copyright registrations. This is a structured, checklist-driven engagement. We will provide a comprehensive inventory of our trademarks, copyrightable works, domains, and supporting documentation. Your role will be to review the inventory, validate our filing strategy, prioritize assets, and prepare and file the appropriate registrations with the USPTO and the U.S. Copyright Office. ## Responsibilities ### Trademark Strategy & Filing * Review our trademark inventory and confirm appropriate USPTO classes, filing priorities, and registrability. * Evaluate and advise on word marks, logos, card seals/emblems, program names, and other brand identifiers. * Prepare and file USPTO trademark applications for approved marks. * Review and confirm specimens of use, including our website, identification cards, marketing materials, and related branding assets. * Assess distinctiveness and advise which marks are strong candidates for registration versus those that may be descriptive or otherwise difficult to protect. * Recommend a cost-effective filing strategy that prioritizes core brand assets while identifying secondary marks that can be filed later. ### Copyright Registration * Review our copyright asset inventory and determine which works are ready for registration. * Prepare and file U.S. Copyright Office applications for finalized creative works, including: * Final Driving Permit design * Final IDA Card design * Security seal/authenticity emblem artwork * Website graphics * Marketing materials * Other original creative assets identified during the engagement * Advise whether any works should be postponed until revisions or legal updates are complete. ### Intellectual Property Portfolio Strategy * Review ownership of all intellectual property and verify work-for-hire status for contractor-created assets. * Identify any assignments or ownership documentation that should be completed before filing. * Provide recommendations for domain-to-trademark alignment, including defensive registrations, close variants, and priority domains. * Advise on protecting IDA-specific branding while recognizing generic or descriptive terminology that may not qualify for exclusive trademark protection. * Develop a practical filing roadmap outlining: * High-priority filings * Secondary filings * Recommended filing sequence * Future international filing considerations ### Ongoing Legal Support * Communicate filing progress and expected timelines. * Respond to questions throughout the engagement. * Handle or advise on USPTO Office Actions and Copyright Office correspondence if they arise. --- ## Intellectual Property Assets ### Trademarks * Company name * Word marks * Logos * Security seal/authenticity emblem * Product and program names * Other brand identifiers ### Copyrights * Graphic designs * Card artwork * Driving permit designs * Marketing content * Website content * Original creative works ### Domains (Advisory) Provide recommendations regarding: * Primary IDA domain * .net and .org variants * Common misspellings * Country-code TLDs * Domain protection strategy aligned with trademark filings *Please note that this portion is advisory only, as domain names are not registered through the USPTO.* --- ## Qualifications We are looking for a U.S.-licensed attorney who has: * Demonstrated experience filing USPTO trademark applications. * Experience registering works with the U.S. Copyright Office. * Strong knowledge of trademark class selection, specimen requirements, and registrability analysis. * Experience advising on contractor-created intellectual property, work-for-hire agreements, and IP assignments. * The ability to translate a structured asset inventory into a practical filing strategy. * Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain legal issues in clear, non-technical language. * A proven ability to meet filing deadlines and manage post-filing communications. Please include **2–3 examples of trademark or copyright registrations** you have handled (redacted if necessary for confidentiality). --- ## Preferred Experience While not required, the following experience would be valuable: * Managing intellectual property portfolios for growing brands. * Protecting physical products or security-printed materials such as identification cards or permits. * Domain protection and UDRP dispute strategy. * Software or source code copyright registration. * International trademark strategy, including Madrid Protocol filings. --- ## Compensation This is a project-based engagement with the potential for an ongoing relationship. We are open to discussing compensation based on your preferred fee structure, including: * Flat fee per trademark filing * Flat fee per copyright registration * Hourly consultation * Monthly retainer Our initial engagement is expected to include approximately: * **4–7 USPTO trademark applications** * **5–10 U.S. Copyright Office registrations** Additional filings are anticipated as our intellectual property portfolio continues to grow. --- ## How to Apply Please include the following in your proposal: * A brief introduction outlining your intellectual property experience. * Two or three examples of USPTO trademark or U.S. Copyright Office filings you have completed. * Your preferred pricing structure (flat fee, hourly, or retainer). * Your estimated turnaround time for the initial filing package. * Confirmation that you can advise on ownership, work-for-hire, and IP assignment issues as part of this engagement.
