Experienced Financial Controller for Book Cleanup & Managing 5 Reports

The situation Our books are roughly 18 months behind on clean reconciliation, the data lives across several disconnected systems, and the accounting function needs a real leader to take ownership. We are hiring a Financial Controller to fix the books, tighten the close, and manage a team of 5. This is a hands-on leadership role. You will be in the reconciliations yourself, not just reviewing them, and you will also be accountable for the people doing the work. About us: iPromo is an established, fully remote B2B distributor in the promotional products and branded merchandise space (roughly $15M annual revenue, US-based, Florida). We sell hard goods and apparel to enterprise, government, and mid-market clients. We are in aggressive growth mode and need a financial foundation we can trust to support it. What you will own: The 18-month cleanup: reconcile transactions in QuickBooks Online against bank, credit card, and merchant statements, and reconcile across our systems so the numbers agree end to end (QuickBooks Online, CommonSKU, Syncore, HubSpot, Stripe, Paylocity, Avalara) Investigate and clear discrepancies, duplicates, miscategorized transactions, and unreconciled items, then document what was wrong and the repeatable process going forward The monthly close: deliver a reliable, on-time close with clean financial statements (P&L, balance sheet, cash flow) and variance commentary for the CEO Management of 5 direct reports: set priorities, review work, hold the team accountable, and build the operating rhythm of the function General ledger integrity: journal entries, reconciliations, and a clean chart of accounts under GAAP Inventory and COGS accounting, vendor payables, and product-based margin analysis for a hard goods distribution business AP and AR oversight, including aging and collections Internal controls, approval workflows, and segregation of duties appropriate for a scaling business Required experience 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 3 years as a Controller or Finance Director Proven track record cleaning up messy or backlogged books (you will be asked to describe a specific example) Direct experience managing a team of accountants or bookkeepers Deep QuickBooks Online reconciliation experience Strong understanding of inventory, COGS, and vendor payables in a hard goods or B2B distribution business Comfortable reconciling data across multiple disconnected systems Strong command of GAAP and financial reporting Clear written and spoken English, with the ability to explain financials to a non-finance CEO Able to work USA Eastern Time hours Nice to have QuickBooks ProAdvisor certification, or ACCA / CA / CMA Experience with CommonSKU, Syncore, Stripe, HubSpot, Paylocity, or Avalara US multi-state sales tax exposure Promotional products, print, packaging, or distribution industry background Comfort using AI tools to speed up finance workflows Engagement terms Full-time, ongoing contract, fully remote Signed NDA required before any access to financial systems
