Grant Writer for Veteran Housing

Summary

Join our nonprofit as a Grant Writer to secure funding for veteran transitional housing. You'll research and write grants, develop strategies, and build relationships with funders. Experience with SSVF and VA funding is preferred. Help us provide stable housing and supportive services to veterans in need. Phoenix House is a newly IRS-approved 501(c)(3) nonprofit providing transitional housing for veterans in San Antonio, TX. We’re founder-led, mission-driven, and at an early stage: no grant history yet, no property secured (a personal residence will be leased to the nonprofit at fair market value once we relocate, giving us site control). I’m looking for a grant writer or funding strategist who can help us go from zero to our first funded award — and ideally build a long-term funding pipeline from there. What I need help with: • Prioritizing and applying for our near-term targets: SSVF (Supportive Services for Veteran Families) and the Texas Veterans Commission Fund for Veterans’ Assistance • Navigating SAM.gov/grants.gov registration and federal NOFO requirements • Building a realistic funder pipeline (federal, state, and private/foundation) appropriate for a brand-new organization with no track record yet • Writing compelling, evidence-based proposals and program narratives • Advising on grant-readiness gaps — what we need in place before applying, not after Ideal candidate has: • Direct experience with SSVF, VA, HUD, or other veteran/homeless-services federal grant mechanisms — general grant-writing experience alone is not enough for this role • A track record of securing funding for early-stage or newly-formed nonprofits, not just established organizations • Honesty about gaps in your experience — I’d rather hear “I haven’t done X, but here’s what I bring instead” than inflated claims • Fee-for-service or hourly billing only — no commission/percentage-based compensation (this violates professional fundraising ethics standards) Before applying, please answer: 1. Have you secured funding for a veteran-serving or homeless-services nonprofit? If so, which funder(s) and what was the outcome? 2. Have you worked with an organization at our exact stage — approved 501(c)(3), no grant history, no property yet? What did that path look like? 3. What’s your billing structure (hourly/flat fee), and what would a realistic first project (SSVF application) cost? I’m reviewing applications carefully and will follow up with specific questions before hiring, so detailed, honest answers will move faster than generic pitches. Project type: Ongoing, starting with a defined first project (SSVF application)
