Description About InternWorks InternWorks connects exceptional high school and college students with experienced professionals for structured, project-based internships that build real-world skills and career readiness. InternWorks is seeking an experienced mechanical or aerospace engineer to mentor a motivated engineering student through a complete, hands-on design project. Our student already has solid CAD experience (OnShape, Fusion 360) and is looking to grow further under the guidance of a mentor who can walk them through the full engineering design process — not just isolated tasks. The ideal mentor will help guide the student through: Defining the problem and design requirements Generating and comparing design concepts Performing engineering calculations and simulations (including FEA) Creating detailed CAD models and technical drawings (OnShape, SolidWorks, and/or Fusion 360) Fabricating a working prototype Testing against requirements and collecting performance data Iterating on the design based on test results Documenting the entire process in a professional technical report and presentation Skills the mentor should help develop: Engineering drawings, GD&T, FEA, mechanism design, statics and dynamics, machine design, materials engineering, 3D printing, manufacturing, data collection, and iterative prototyping. Suggested project types (open to mentor's input): An automated manufacturing machine, a robotic arm with custom mechanisms, a mechanical testing rig, an electric go-kart subsystem, a solar-powered charging station, a desktop CNC/laser engraver, or a custom gearbox. What we're looking for in a mentor: Real-world engineering experience in mechanical or aerospace fields Willingness to guide the student through a genuine project with real deliverables, not a purely academic exercise Comfortable structuring a project so the student experiences the full workflow, from concept through validated prototype Prefer a project where the student works largely independently, though a small team setting is fine as long as the student's responsibilities span most of the process above This is an opportunity to shape a student's growth by giving them ownership of a meaningful, real-world engineering challenge. We're looking for mentors who are patient, communicative, and passionate about developing the next generation of engineers. How to Apply: Please submit a brief proposal including: A 2-3 sentence overview of what your agency or business does. A couple of sentences on what specific projects you would assign to the intern right away. Confirming your availability to dedicate 8-10 hours of mentorship over the 4-6 week period.⚙️
