Job Overview: US~Observer (usobserver.com) is a leading independent investigative publication founded in 1991, dedicated to exposing corruption, defending the wrongfully accused, and delivering fearless journalism on systemic abuses in the criminal justice system, government agencies (SEC, IRS, DOJ), and financial markets. We are seeking an experienced investigative journalist to research, report, and write in-depth articles on specific high-impact cases and topics. This is a freelance/contract role with potential for ongoing assignments. You will contribute to stories that hold powerful entities accountable, uncover hidden evidence, and support justice for individuals and companies facing unjust prosecutions or financial schemes. Key Responsibilities: Conduct deep-dive investigations into cases involving alleged prosecutorial misconduct, false charges, judicial issues, and government overreach. Research and report on financial crimes, including naked short selling, abusive short-selling practices, market manipulation, securities fraud, and related brokerage/hedge fund activities. Analyze complex financial systems, stock market mechanics, SEC filings, court documents, and public records to build compelling, evidence-based narratives. Interview sources, review evidence (including seized devices, financial data, and legal filings), and collaborate with our team to produce publishable articles. Work on client-specific stories that align with US~Observer’s mission of vindicating the innocent and exposing corruption. Requirements: Proven experience as an investigative journalist with a strong portfolio of published work (samples required). Deep knowledge of the criminal justice system, including federal prosecutions, evidence handling, RICO cases, and courtroom procedures. Strong understanding of financial systems, stock markets, naked shorting, market manipulation tactics, and regulatory frameworks (SEC rules, etc.). Ability to navigate complex documents, data, and legal/financial terminology while translating them into clear, engaging stories for a broad audience. Excellent research, writing, and interviewing skills with a commitment to accuracy and ethical journalism. Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and able to meet deadlines in a fast-paced, independent environment. Familiarity with tools for public records searches, FOIA requests, and open-source intelligence is a plus. What We Offer: Competitive freelance rates based on experience and project scope. Opportunity to work on impactful stories that make a real difference for clients and readers. Flexibility in a remote/contract role with a publication that has subscribers across all 50 states and internationally. Collaboration with an experienced team focused on advocacy through journalism. How to Apply: Please submit your application on Upwork with: A cover letter explaining your relevant experience in criminal justice and financial/market investigations. 3–5 writing samples (preferably investigative pieces on legal, financial, or corruption-related topics). Your hourly rate or project-based pricing. Any questions about the role.
