KiCAD Design of Industrial 3kV Isolated USB to RS-485 Adapter

Project Overview We are seeking an experienced electronics design engineer with strong KiCAD experience to design a compact, industrial-grade isolated USB to RS-485 adapter PCB. The design will be used in industrial automation and robotics applications where robust isolation, EMC performance, and long-term reliability are important. The selected contractor will be responsible for complete schematic capture, PCB layout, library creation, manufacturing outputs, and transfer of all intellectual property. Required Technologies The design shall utilize the following major components: Isolated DC-DC Converter Recom Power R05C1TF05S-R DigiKey: 945-R05C1TF05S-RCT-ND 1W isolated DC-DC converter 3kV isolation barrier USB Interface FTDI USB-UART solution FT234XD preferred Alternative FTDI solutions may be proposed with justification Digital Isolation Texas Instruments ISO7721 Texas Instruments ISO7720 RS-485 Interface Texas Instruments ISO1450 isolated RS-485 transceiver Alternative components may be proposed but require approval prior to implementation. Functional Requirements The adapter shall provide: USB Interface USB-C connector USB bus powered operation USB 2.0 Full Speed support RS-485 Interface Half-duplex RS-485 A/B terminals Optional shield connection Isolation Minimum 3kV galvanic isolation Isolation between USB host and RS-485 network Indicators USB Power LED Isolated Power LED TX Activity LED RX Activity LED Protection Requirements The design should include: USB Protection ESD protection on USB D+ and D- Input overcurrent protection RS-485 Protection TVS protection on A/B lines Industrial surge protection IEC61000-4-2 ESD design practices IEC61000-4-4 EFT design practices EMC Proper isolation barrier implementation Controlled return current paths Robust industrial layout practices PCB Requirements CAD Platform KiCAD only Latest stable version PCB 2-layer or 4-layer design (contractor recommendation) Compact layout Isolation slot under barrier where appropriate Proper creepage and clearance distances Manufacturing Designed for standard PCB fabrication houses JLCPCB-compatible outputs preferred Deliverables The following deliverables are required: Source Files Complete KiCAD project Schematic files PCB layout files Project configuration files Libraries Custom symbols Custom footprints 3D models Library tables Manufacturing Package Gerbers Drill files Pick and Place file Assembly drawings Fabrication drawings BOM with manufacturer part numbers Documentation Design notes Block diagram Bring-up notes Revision history Intellectual Property All work performed under this project shall become the sole property of the client upon final payment. Contractor must provide: Full editable source files No encrypted or locked design elements No restrictions on future modification No reuse of proprietary design elements Desired Qualifications Please include: Examples of previous KiCAD projects Experience with: USB hardware design RS-485 interfaces Isolation barriers Industrial controls EMC/ESD design Estimated timeline Fixed-price quotation Bonus Experience Preference will be given to engineers with experience in: Industrial automation Robotics Motion control IEC61000 compliance Isolation and safety design Texas Instruments isolation products
