MEP Engineer / Project Manager – HVAC & Plumbing

We are seeking an experienced, self-directed Mechanical & Plumbing Designer and Project Manager for an ongoing, long-term freelance engagement. This position has strong potential to transition into a permanent, full-time role for the right candidate. You will split your time between hands-on engineering design and end-to-end project management, working on project tasks from initial concept through construction documents and then construction administration. Although a degree of self-direction is expected, senior mentorship and guidance will be provided to help bridge the gap between the candidates' experience/skills and project requirements. What You Will Do: • System Design: Perform load calculations, size equipment, and design comprehensive HVAC, plumbing, and hydronic systems. • Drafting & Modeling: Redline changes needed on plans to our CAD/BIM team. Where candidates are proficient in AutoCAD or Revit MEP, work may be performed directly. Currently, more than 80% of projects are produced in Revit, the remaining in 2D AutoCAD. • Code Compliance: Ensure all layouts comply fully with local, state, and national building codes. Most projects are located inside California, so familiarity with UMC/UPC and CA codes will be key in performing design tasks. Guidance & mentorship will be provided for IMC/IPC code experienced candidates. • Project Management: Track project schedules, milestones, manage deliverables, and ensure client timelines are met. • Communication: Act as our technical point of contact, coordinating directly with architects, clients, and contractors to coordinate MEP design with other design team members, resolve RFIs, and design clashes. What We Are Looking For: • Proven Track Record: 5+ years of combined experience in HVAC/plumbing design and active project management. • Software Mastery: Proficiency in AutoCAD and/or Revit is preferred (please specify your software preference in your proposal). • Communication Skills: Exceptional written and verbal English communication, as you will lead client and coordination meetings. • Independence: A self-starter who requires minimal oversight and can hit the ground running with existing project standards. • Credentials (Plus): A PE license, ASPE CPD, ASHRAE Certification(s), or LEED accreditation is a significant advantage. Engagement Details: • Type: Ongoing freelance contract with potential transition to full-time employment. • Hours: 20–40 hours per week, depending on the current project pipeline. • Locations: Remote work with workstations available in Moraga, CA, office, and future office in/near El Dorado, Placer, or Sacramento Counties in CA.
