The Role You'll start as Managing Editor of Gardening Nation, a print newspaper for garden lovers, working with the Editor-in-Chief and an assigned Editor (who handles line-level editing) to plan, commission, and ship the print newspaper each month. After an onboarding period, you'll take full ownership of Gardening Nation and begin overseeing deadlines and editorial standards across our other four publications (Baking Nation, History Nation, Crochet Nation, Knit Nation). Over time, you'll take on additional publications and special editions as we expand. This is an editorial leadership role, not a hands-on copy role — your Editor handles the line edits. Reports to: Editor-in-Chief Manages: One Editor; freelance writers; editorial assistants as needed Type: Full-time, remote, long-term Responsibilities Own the editorial calendar and 24-page Table of Contents for Gardening Nation, we work three months ahead of print Manage the assigned Editor — set direction, review their edits, give feedback Hit ClickUp deadlines consistently and flag risks early Final overview pass and sign-off on every issue before print Once trained, oversee deadlines and production schedules across all five publications (Note you won’t be managing the editing on other four publications, just overseeing deadlines so project management skills are important). Take on managing editorship of an additional 2–4 publications over time as the portfolio grows Own special editions outside our regular monthly cadence (e.g. a Cut Flower Garden special for Gardening Nation) Run periodic reader surveys and reader exit surveys; use findings to inform editorial decisions Build relationships with book publishers; work from upcoming release calendars to organize email-based author interviews and excerpt features Identify and vet interview subjects for monthly features (Greet the Gardener and equivalents); direct editorial assistants on research Brief and manage freelance writers; track performance and develop long-term relationships with strong contributors Requirements Editorial experience in magazines, newspapers, or content businesses with regular publication cadences Proven project management experience — you've successfully managed multiple workstreams, deadlines, and people simultaneously Strong organizational skills and reliability on deadlines Confident written communication, including with external partners like publishers and authors Ability to give clear, kind, constructive feedback to editors and writers Nice to Haves Direct experience managing other editors Familiarity with ClickUp or similar project management tools Genuine interest in our subject matter (gardening, crafts, baking, history) Experience working with book publishers or author publicists Background in print publishing specifically This Role Is Not For You If You're looking for a hands-on line-editing role You prefer fast, scrappy digital content over considered, monthly print Deadlines are something you treat as flexible suggestions You want to write more than you lead How to Apply A short introduction telling us who you are, why this role interests you, and any relevant work experience Your CV or résumé Two to three samples of your editorial work We read every application personally.
