Mechanical Engineer for Cryogenic Systems

Job Title Mechanical Engineer (PE) – Gas & Cryogenic System Design ________________________________________ Project Overview We are Safe Gas Systems, a Colorado-based engineering and services firm specializing in industrial gas and cryogenic systems (bulk tanks, vaporizers, piping, safety controls, and NFPA-compliant installations). We are looking for an experienced Mechanical Engineer with an active PE license to support design and review work on a contract basis, with the potential for ongoing collaboration. ________________________________________ Scope of Work The initial engagement will focus on one or more projects involving atmospheric cryogens and compressed gas systems. Typical tasks may include: • Reviewing and refining mechanical designs for gas and cryogenic systems (bulk storage, VIP/VTI, distribution piping, valves, regulators, relief devices) • Performing engineering calculations: fluid flow, pressure drop, heat transfer, equipment and relief sizing, and vent routing. • Reviewing and commenting on P&IDs, general arrangements, details, and installation drawings produced by our drafting team. • Providing code-compliance input referencing NFPA 55/99/2, CGA guidance, and applicable building/fire codes (IBC, IMC, IFC). • Preparing brief calculation summaries or engineering notes suitable for internal QA and permit packages. This is primarily design-review and calculation work; we do not need site visits for this Upwork engagement. ________________________________________ Required Expertise • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (or closely related) and active PE license in at least one U.S. state. • 5+ years of experience with pressurized piping systems, process or industrial gas systems, or cryogenic equipment. • Strong working knowledge of thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics as applied to gases and cryogenic liquids. • Experience producing or reviewing P&IDs and mechanical drawings and working alongside CAD/drafters. • Familiarity with NFPA, CGA, and ASME piping codes is highly preferred.
