Summary

We are seeking a photographer based in Japan for ongoing project-based work capturing expert-led cultural tours in several destinations, including: - Tokyo - Kyoto - Osaka - Hiroshima - Kanazawa Context Travel offers expert-led cultural experiences designed for curious travelers. Our tours are led by historians, architects, archaeologists, food experts, and other specialists who help travelers understand a destination beyond the guidebook. We're looking to build a relationship with a photographer who can support multiple shoots throughout the year. What We’re Looking For This is not traditional event photography. Our imagery focuses on: - Authentic interaction between guides and travelers - Moments of discovery and learning - A strong sense of place - Real reactions and genuine human connection We value documentary-style photography that feels natural, thoughtful, and immersive. Our Visual Approach We follow a simple storytelling framework: Place - Clear, recognizable images that establish the destination. Discovery - Guides actively teaching, travelers observing, listening, tasting, and engaging. Moment - The memory guests carry home—wonder, curiosity, connection, and insight. We avoid: - Staged posing - Influencer-style content - Overly stylized editing - Artificial setups detached from the experience Typical Assignments Shoots generally involve: - 2–4 hour tours - Small groups of travelers - One expert guide - Walking tours, museum visits, food experiences, architecture tours, or historical sites Depending on the city, assignments may include: - Urban exploration and city orientation tours - Food and market experiences - Museum and cultural institution visits - Historic neighborhoods and monuments Deliverables - Curated selection of edited, high-resolution images - Mix of wide environmental shots, interaction shots, and candid moments - Both landscape and portrait orientation - Natural color treatment and editing Bonus Skills (not a requirement) Experience with videography is a plus. If applicable, we may also be interested in: - Short-form documentary-style video clips - Social media content capture - Light interview or guide footage Please include examples if available.
