Summary

Title: Senior Controller (CPA Preferred), 15+ Years, US-Based, for Fractional CFO Firm SGS is a fractional CFO and capital advisory firm serving lower middle market companies, many of them PE-backed or lender-backed multi-entity roll-ups. We're hiring a senior controller-level contractor to work directly with the founder on client engagements. This is not a bookkeeping role. Our clients have in-house bookkeepers who run the day-to-day. You are the layer above: reviewing their work, tightening the close, and turning the numbers into tools management actually uses. What you'll do: Review month-end close alongside each client's in-house accounting staff: catch errors, question entries, get the books to audit-ready quality Prepare annual and rolling budgets, often across multiple entities Run monthly budget variance analysis with commentary that explains what happened and why, not just what moved Build management reporting that is useful, easy to read, and not overbuilt Explain your reasoning. When something should be booked or structured a certain way, you can tell an owner why in plain language What we're looking for: 15+ years in accounting at the controller level or above. Real accounting, not bookkeeping: GAAP close, accruals, multi-entity consolidation. Purchase accounting exposure a plus CPA strongly preferred Genuine business sense. You understand the operations behind the numbers and can talk to a CEO about margins, not just debits and credits Strong Excel. QuickBooks Online or Intuit Enterprise Suite experience a plus US-based, working US Eastern hours Clear, direct written and verbal communication Engagement: Remote, hourly, ongoing. Part-time to start with room to grow as our client base expands. You'd work directly with the founder. Full time potential To apply: Briefly describe one close process you took over and improved, and one management report you built that leadership actually used.
