Senior Mechanical Engineer – Independent SolidWorks CAD & Design for Manufacture (DFM) Review
Worldwide
ArchiveStack – Independent Mechanical Engineering Review of Complete SolidWorks CAD Package Project Overview ArchiveStack is a new desktop storage system designed to organise multiple external hard drives and SSDs. It is a passive mechanical product with no electronics. The design has been completed in SolidWorks and is now ready for independent professional review before prototype manufacture. I am seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer with strong SolidWorks, plastic product design and Design for Manufacture (DFM) experience to perform a comprehensive engineering review of the complete CAD package. This is not a design project and not a redesign project. The purpose is to obtain an independent professional assessment of the existing design before committing to prototype manufacture. Objective Perform a complete engineering review of the supplied CAD package and determine whether the design is suitable to proceed to prototype manufacture. Identify any issues affecting functionality, assembly, manufacturability, durability, prototype production, future injection moulding and engineering documentation. Identify design weaknesses, modelling errors, missing information, manufacturing concerns and opportunities for improvement. Files Provided SolidWorks Part (.SLDPRT), SolidWorks Assembly (.SLDASM), STEP files, STL files, PDF engineering drawings, assembly drawings and design notes, where applicable. Scope of Review Carry out a comprehensive professional engineering review of the complete design. The review should include all aspects necessary for a commercial plastic product progressing from prototype manufacture towards future injection mould production, including overall design quality, assembly and fit, interference and clearances, dimensional accuracy, tolerances, wall thickness, draft angles, structural integrity, manufacturability, ease of assembly, suitability for prototype manufacture, suitability for future injection mould tooling, CAD model quality, engineering drawing quality and completeness of the documentation package. Identify anything missing or requiring improvement before prototype manufacture. Required Deliverables 1. Executive Summary Provide your overall assessment of the design, whether it is ready for prototype manufacture and summarise the major findings. 2. Detailed Findings List every issue identified. For each issue include a description, reason for concern, recommended solution and priority. Classify each issue as Critical, Recommended or Optional. 3. Positive Findings Identify aspects of the design that are well executed and suitable for manufacture so I know what has been reviewed and found satisfactory. 4. Final Recommendation Provide your professional opinion regarding engineering quality, manufacturability, prototype readiness and future production suitability. State clearly whether you recommend proceeding to prototype manufacture or making changes first. Applicant Requirements Applicants should have significant commercial experience in Mechanical Engineering, SolidWorks, Plastic Product Design, Design for Manufacture (DFM), Injection Moulding and Prototype Development. Experience reviewing products intended for commercial manufacture is highly desirable. Confidentiality This project is strictly confidential. The successful applicant will be required to sign my Non-Disclosure, Non-Use and Non-Circumvention (NNN) Agreement before any design files are released. When Applying Please include a brief summary of your relevant experience, examples of similar engineering review or DFM projects, your experience with plastic product design and injection moulding, an estimate of the time required to complete the review, and confirmation that you can provide a comprehensive written engineering report.
