I help healthcare organizations design, fix, and deliver real-world interoperability solutions - not just theoretical HL7/FHIR/IHE implementations. With 15+ years of hands-on experience, I've built and deployed integrations across HL7v2, HL7v3, C-CDA, FHIR, and IHE for more than 50 organizations worldwide. I work directly at the message level - transformations, mappings, validation, conformance, and troubleshooting - using tools like Mirth Connect, Apache NiFi, and Smile CDR. Many clients come to me when: • integrations don't work as expected • FHIR implementations become too complex • HL7 mappings break across systems • conformance and validation issues block go-live I don't just advise - I build, debug, and deliver working solutions. What makes me different • Author of HL7 v2/v3 specifications and profiles • Contributor to early HL7 FHIR (STU3) • Primary author for Canadian Core/Baseline FHIR profiles • published books and multiple training courses on HL7/FHIR • All HL7 certifications + IHE + SNOMED CT training up to Authoring Level 1 I work at the intersection of specification and implementation - where standards meet real systems. What I can help you with: • HL7v2 / HL7v3 interface development and troubleshooting • FHIR API design, profiling, and implementation • HL7v2 ↔ FHIR transformations (ADT, ORU, OML, etc.) • FHIR ↔ OMOP transformations • C-CDA parsing, generation, validation and C-CDA ↔ FHIR transformation • Integration engine development (Mirth Connect, Apache NiFi) • Conformance testing and validation (HL7v2/v3, FHIR, C-CDA) • Fixing broken integrations and production issues • Implementation Guides (IG), FSH, SUSHI • IHE / HIE integrations (XDS, XCA, XCPD, etc.) Technical stack: • FHIR (R4, STU3), HL7 v2/v3, C-CDA, IHE • Mirth Connect, Apache NiFi, Smile CDR, Aidbox • Java, JavaScript, Python, React, SQL, XML, XSLT, Schematron • Touchstone, Simplifier, Forge, IG Publisher AI & Automation (Applied to Healthcare Interoperability) • Multi-agent AI workflows for healthcare data transformation and validation • LLM-assisted HL7/FHIR mapping and interface documentation • AI-driven data quality analysis and anomaly detection in healthcare messages • Automation of conformance testing and validation workflows using LLM-based agents • Use of AI tools to accelerate implementation guide development and integration debugging Certifications • HL7 FHIR Advanced Developer • HL7 FHIR Foundational Implementer • HL7 FHIR R4 Proficiency • HL7 v2 Control Specialist • HL7 CDA Specialist • HL7 v3 RIM Specialist • IHE Certified Professional • SNOMED CT Terminology Services Let's work! If you need someone who understands both the standard and the implementation, I can help you move faster and avoid costly mistakes.

Messy data slowing your team down? I build scalable ETL/ELT pipelines and modern cloud architectures on Azure, Databricks, Fabric, and Snowflake that turn raw, chaotic data into clean, analytics-ready systems fast and reliably. I bridge the gap between fragmented data sources and production-grade dashboards, seamlessly adapting to your existing infrastructure rather than forcing an expensive rebuild. What I Can Help You With: Data Warehouse & Lakehouse Architecture: Implementing Medallion design patterns (Bronze → Silver → Gold) using Delta Lake, Microsoft Fabric OneLake, and Snowflake. Scalable ETL/ELT Ingestion: Building automated, metadata-driven pipelines via Azure Data Factory, Fabric Pipelines, Databricks (PySpark/SQL), and dbt. Real-Time Data Streaming: Architecting low-latency workflows using Apache Kafka, Azure Event Hubs, and streaming engines. Database Design & Optimization: Performance tuning, indexing, and data modeling for PostgreSQL, Azure SQL, and cloud warehouses. Proven Project Highlights: Microsoft Fabric Incremental Pipeline: Built a control-table pattern using Get Metadata, Lookup, and ForEach loops to orchestrate zero-duplicate, quarterly ingestion from SharePoint into OneLake via Dataflow Gen2. Azure/Databricks Streaming: Developed a restaurant analytics platform processing 80,000+ events/day, cutting reporting lag from 6 hours to under 3 minutes. Kafka/Snowflake Pipeline: Engineered a real-time stock market data pipeline tracking 120+ tickers with under 8 seconds end-to-end latency. I write clean, documented code your team can maintain long-term and provide transparent daily updates. Message me with your data challenge and I’ll walk you through exactly how to solve it.

It was the most important moment of my 13+ years of career. It was when I realized that there is always a trade-off in technology. You have to do something intentionally bad in order to succeed as a Small Medium Business in the Digital Transformation. And 70% fail because they insist on doing this very thing well. A while back, when I finally landed a job in a corporation, I was excited that I was going to use state-of-art technology. But, one of my first features immediately added some bugs. As I fixed those bugs, I introduced another, but also other bugs started to pop up caused by previous developers. In laymen terms, it is like a Rubik’s cube. As you carry on assembling the second face, you may accidentally mess up the first bit. It wasn’t like that when I started my career in technology in the civil service a long time ago. Yes, I was frustrated because we used old boring technology. But, we didn’t have to put out the fire all the time because that limited technology prevented us from getting in this position. Coincidence or not, the easiest way to solve the Rubik’s cube is putting constraints. If you move towards, you have to move backwards at some point. Fast forward to nowadays, some of my clients want to create highly customized User Experience. As the project starts to grow, hyper customization introduces more complexity. Then, you make a small change and get unexpected results. You didn't account for all the complex consequences. And this happens again and again, and you can’t avoid it. The software had become brittle. You start to miss deadlines or have to hire more developers to fix cracks faster, and eventually I get hired. That’s the time I have the hard talk: don’t bite more than you can chew, stop chasing the perfect User Experience (good User Interface is not a problem though) with a small team. If a BigTech didn’t have to hire thousands of engineers to provide that, they certainly wouldn’t. Anyway, User Experience is only noticed by B2C clients, and this is where Big Techs thrive. In B2B or internal tool software, who pays for the software won’t even use it. Hey, my name is João, I’m a software architect and developer, feel free to send me a message asking how I can make your business grow. What technologies do I work with? The simple ones: HTML, CSS, Bootstrap, Bash, XML, PostgreSQL, Apache Camel, Apache Knowledge Is Everything, Keycloak. If you need a hypercustomized solution, I can decently program in Java, Python and JavaScript, though. If you have any doubts, don’t hesitate to contact me.

NEED PRODUCTION-READY, FUNCTIONAL CAD MODELS OPTIMIZED FOR 3D PRINTING? Coming from a background in enterprise software engineering (with an MS in Computer Science), I bring a developer's mindset to 3D CAD design. I don't just sculpt shapes—I engineer functional, parametric systems. My main focus is creating clean, reliable models built specifically for FDM printing. I know firsthand how critical printability, tight tolerances, and mechanical fits are, so I design parts that work perfectly right off the build plate. I treat CAD design like writing production-grade code. When you work with me, you get: ▪ TRUE PARAMETRIC DESIGN: Models built so you can easily tweak and update dimensions by changing a few simple values. ▪ CLEAN ARCHITECTURE: A tidy file structure and a logical, easy-to-read model history timeline. ▪ END-TO-END SUPPORT: I don't just hand over a file. I am happy to advise on slicing settings, material choices, and print optimization to make sure you get the best physical result. I publish my independent work under the "Void to Solid" name (feel free to check out these models in my Upwork portfolio). If you have a sketch, a technical requirement, or just a rough idea in mind—feel free to reach out. Let's discuss how we can bring it to life.

How to Hire Top Apache NiFi Specialists

How to hire Apache NiFi experts

Knowledge is power, and the key to unlocking this power lies in your ability to track and manage the flow of data within your business or organization. An Apache NiFi expert can help you set up the data routing, transformation, and system mediation logic you need to master your data.

So how do you hire Apache NiFi experts? What follows are some tips for finding top Apache NiFi experts on Upwork.

How to shortlist Apache NiFi consultants

As you’re browsing available Apache NiFi consultants, it can be helpful to develop a shortlist of the independent professionals you may want to interview. You can screen profiles on criteria such as:

  • Technology fit. You want an Apache NiFi expert who understands the technologies behind your products and services so they can design custom dataflow solutions for your business.
  • Workflow. You want an Apache NiFi expert who can slide right into your existing developer workflow (e.g., Jira, Slack).
  • Feedback. Check reviews from past clients for glowing testimonials or red flags that can tell you what it’s like to work with a particular Apache NiFi expert.

How to write an effective Apache NiFi job post

With a clear picture of your ideal Apache NiFi expert in mind, it’s time to write that job post. Although you don’t need a full job description as you would when hiring an employee, aim to provide enough detail for a consultant to know if they’re the right fit for the project.

An effective Apache NiFi job post should include:

  • Scope of work: From tracking dataflows to creating loss-tolerant data delivery systems, list all the deliverables you’ll need.
  • Project length: Your job post should indicate whether this is a smaller or larger project.
  • Background: If you prefer experience working with certain industries, software, or technologies, mention this here.
  • Budget: Set a budget and note your preference for hourly rates vs. fixed-price contracts.
