Something isn't working the way it should, and you need to understand why. It may be a material that keeps failing in use. A molded component coming out warped even after changes at the factory. A competitor's product you need to understand from the inside out. Or a formulation that needs to reach a specific performance target without months of trial and error. These are the kinds of problems I work on. My background is in polymer engineering and chemical process engineering, with 8+ years of work across materials, formulation development, reverse engineering, manufacturing, and applied R&D. On Upwork, that represents $80K+ earned across 69 jobs and 1,639 hours. The work can start almost anywhere. Sometimes there is a physical sample but no reliable formulation. Sometimes the formulation exists, but the product is not performing as expected. And sometimes the material itself is fine while the real problem sits in processing, mold design, cooling, residual stress, geometry, additives, or manufacturing conditions. Finding that distinction early can save a lot of unnecessary testing and costly iterations. For reverse engineering, I work backwards from the product rather than relying on a single analytical result.
