How to Become a Freelance Accountant
If you enjoy numbers and business, you might be well suited for a career as a freelance accountant. Freelance accountants work with clients across all industries and revenue sizes.
With a bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or an equivalent field, accountants can work with organizations by handling their books, creating financial reports, and conducting financial analysis of a department or an organization. By becoming a certified public accountant (CPA) after passing a CPA exam, freelance accountants can become more marketable.
What does a freelance accountant do?
Freelance accountants participate in several activities related to the financial health of an organization. As an accountant, your role will include reviewing financial statements, data entry, developing financial reports, and reconciling/balancing general ledger accounts.
In addition, freelance accountants bring best-practice financial management to a client’s organization, including working with other financial professionals and adhering to standard corporate financial practices.
What skills do I need to become a freelance accountant?
Receiving a bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or an equivalent field is necessary to become a freelance accountant. In addition, those with a master’s degree/MBA or a CPA certification are more attractive to potential employers, and an involvement in some sort of an accounting program is considered an education requirement for many accounting firms.
Common skills a freelance accountant should possess include:
- Attention to detail
- Experience working with the latest accounting software, including QuickBooks and Sage
- Knowledge in basic financial accounting tactics such as auditing, managing financial records, and handling financial statements
- Working and cooperating with other business administrations, bookkeepers, certified internal auditors, certified management accountants, accredited accounting firms, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics
Should I get an accounting certification?
In addition to developing your skills, it may be helpful to obtain a professional certification to help your Upwork profile stand out. The most popular accounting certification is a certified public accountant (CPA). In addition, other certifications available for accountants are:
- Chartered financial analyst (CFA)
- Certified management accountant (CMA)
- Certified internal auditor (CIA)
- Certified information systems auditor (CISA)
There are numerous other fields of accounting out there that don’t have “accounting” in the name. Different educational requirements or skills may be required for each.
What are the job responsibilities of a freelance accountant?
An entry-level freelance accountant will have several responsibilities when it comes to serving a client’s financial needs. Depending on your career path and degree programs, business administrations may require more responsibilities to be handled than an entry-level position.
The responsibilities of a full-time freelance accountant may include:
- Assist with the day-to-day activities of financial ledgers and reporting systems regarding accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, taxes, and more
- Perform financial reconciliations, account analysis, auditing, and other related accounting procedures
- Conduct internal audits, controls, and checks throughout all departments
- Reconcile general ledger accounts
- Engage with banks, credit card companies, accounting firms, and tax firms, as needed, in relation to corporate financial best practices
